A phunnel bowl is a hookah bowl with one hole in the middle, which is why it is also called a single-hole bowl . This is also the big difference to classic multi-hole bowl , because due to the fact that the holes are not distributed at the bottom of the tobacco depot, but a raised hole is placed in the middle of the bowl , the bowl construction must be fundamentally different.
Mastering the construction of a Hookah Phunnel bowl is not witchcraft, even if it may sometimes seem that way to beginners! How exactly you have to build the tobacco bowl depends a little on the heat management you want to smoke with. That is, whether you want to use a smokebox or aluminium foil. However, we recommend a smokebox for beginners.
There are also minor differences in the different types of tobacco that you should be aware of. However, there are only small differences here and you have to test it out a little yourself so that you notice how you like which type of tobacco best. But don't worry: you'll get a good feeling for it relatively quickly!
The origin of the phunnel bowl for the hookah lies in America. To be precise, the legendary tobacco manufacturer Tangiers and its founder Eric Hoffmann. At the beginning of the 2000s, Eric had the first hookah phunnel made, which was still relatively narrow but very deep.
This was then also marketed under the Tangiers brand and smoked by hookah smokers with aluminium foil in what is known in this country as the "Yank setup". In this setup, the tobacco is built over the edge and an aluminium foil is stretched over the bowl, on which the coals are then placed. This setup is hardly ever smoked today, especially in Germany. In the meantime, over 90% of bowls are smoked with a smokebox.
In general, however, the hookah phunnel has not yet reached the masses in Germany for very long! It was only in 2018, when the tobacco manufacturer Zomo used the HookahJohn 80ft phunnel at the Shisha trade fair when tasting the tobacco varieties, that many hookah smokers got a taste for it! For this reason, Zomo then imported these heads and distributed them in Germany. From then until 2021, the number of phunnel smokers increased significantly and has been at a high level ever since!
The advantages of the Hookah Phunnel are manifold. We have summarised what we consider to be the most important points:
The first advantage is definitely the most important: the intense flavour that you can create in your hookah with a phunnel bowl. Due to the construction of the phunnel, the heat distribution is better than in a classic multi-hole bowl with a chimney attachment, which makes the taste of the tobacco more intense.
Many hookah smokers like the smoke from the hookah to be as dense as possible. This is where the Phunnel bowls plays into the cards, because the smoke development is enormous and miles ahead of a classic chimney bowl setup! In addition to the intense flavour and the dense smoke formation, the Phunnel also has an advantage when it comes to cleaning, because since the tobacco lies in the round tobacco depot, which has no holes on the underside, no molasses drips through the dip tube into the glass. This means that the glass is not usually soiled by tobacco and cleaning is easier!
The last advantage, which will become increasingly important in the coming years, is tobacco consumption! Many phunnels are more economical compared to classic clay bowls and thus more money stays in your wallet. This is a relevant advantage, especially after the change to the 25g tobacco law, as tobacco prices will increase significantly.
