Hookah Phunnel Bowl at Moze in a huge selection

Hookah Phunnel are the most popular hookah bowls nowadays! This is probably because these types of bowls are relatively easy to prepare and yet offer great potential in flavour intensity and smoke density! A few years ago, beginners were mostly advised to use a standard hookah clay bowl or a stone bowl to start smoking hookah. Fortunately, this is becoming less so, because we believe that it is just as easy for a beginner to build a hookah phunnel bowl as a clay or stone bowl! All a beginner needs is the right instructions and products. › Find more information here

What exactly is a Hookah Phunnel Bowl?

A phunnel bowl is a hookah bowl with one hole in the middle, which is why it is also called a single-hole bowl . This is also the big difference to classic multi-hole bowl , because due to the fact that the holes are not distributed at the bottom of the tobacco depot, but a raised hole is placed in the middle of the bowl , the bowl construction must be fundamentally different.

Preparing the phunnel bowl correctly

Mastering the construction of a Hookah Phunnel bowl is not witchcraft, even if it may sometimes seem that way to beginners! How exactly you have to build the tobacco bowl depends a little on the heat management you want to smoke with. That is, whether you want to use a smokebox or aluminium foil. However, we recommend a smokebox for beginners.

📄️ For the setup with a smokebox as well as with a HMD, you can find all the info in our article about building a hookah bowl!

There are also minor differences in the different types of tobacco that you should be aware of. However, there are only small differences here and you have to test it out a little yourself so that you notice how you like which type of tobacco best. But don't worry: you'll get a good feeling for it relatively quickly!

History of the Phunnel Bowl: Where does it actually come from?

The origin of the phunnel bowl for the hookah lies in America. To be precise, the legendary tobacco manufacturer Tangiers and its founder Eric Hoffmann. At the beginning of the 2000s, Eric had the first hookah phunnel made, which was still relatively narrow but very deep.

This was then also marketed under the Tangiers brand and smoked by hookah smokers with aluminium foil in what is known in this country as the "Yank setup". In this setup, the tobacco is built over the edge and an aluminium foil is stretched over the bowl, on which the coals are then placed. This setup is hardly ever smoked today, especially in Germany. In the meantime, over 90% of bowls are smoked with a smokebox.

✔️ Good to know: The name of the phunnel comes from the English translation for the word funnel: "funnel"! Why exactly the spelling is not the same, nobody actually knows!

In general, however, the hookah phunnel has not yet reached the masses in Germany for very long! It was only in 2018, when the tobacco manufacturer Zomo used the HookahJohn 80ft phunnel at the Shisha trade fair when tasting the tobacco varieties, that many hookah smokers got a taste for it! For this reason, Zomo then imported these heads and distributed them in Germany. From then until 2021, the number of phunnel smokers increased significantly and has been at a high level ever since!

What are the advantages of a Hookah Phunnel bowl?

The advantages of the Hookah Phunnel are manifold. We have summarised what we consider to be the most important points:

  • Intense taste
  • Dense clouds of smoke
  • No molasses dripping down
  • Usually less tobacco consumption than a standard clay head

The first advantage is definitely the most important: the intense flavour that you can create in your hookah with a phunnel bowl. Due to the construction of the phunnel, the heat distribution is better than in a classic multi-hole bowl with a chimney attachment, which makes the taste of the tobacco more intense.

✔️ Our tip: Use a smokebox or HMD (Heat Management Device) made of aluminium or stainless steel to achieve the best results with a phunnel as a beginner!

Many hookah smokers like the smoke from the hookah to be as dense as possible. This is where the Phunnel bowls plays into the cards, because the smoke development is enormous and miles ahead of a classic chimney bowl setup! In addition to the intense flavour and the dense smoke formation, the Phunnel also has an advantage when it comes to cleaning, because since the tobacco lies in the round tobacco depot, which has no holes on the underside, no molasses drips through the dip tube into the glass. This means that the glass is not usually soiled by tobacco and cleaning is easier!

✔️ Note: If you build the tobacco in your phunnel relatively high, it can still happen that tobacco falls through the bowl. A hookah molasses catcher will help you here!

The last advantage, which will become increasingly important in the coming years, is tobacco consumption! Many phunnels are more economical compared to classic clay bowls and thus more money stays in your wallet. This is a relevant advantage, especially after the change to the 25g tobacco law, as tobacco prices will increase significantly.

Buy your Phunnel now at Moze Shisha

We have a large selection of over 300 different phunnel bowls. So you're sure to find one that matches the design of your hookah and meets your requirements for a perfect bowls. We will explain in detail what you should look out for!

What to look for when buying a new phunnel

If you want to buy a new phunnel, you should ask yourself the following questions beforehand:

  • Do you always smoke the same flavour in your hookah? If you always smoke the same flavour, you can use unglazed bowls. Some hookah smokers who always smoke the same type of tobacco swear that the flavour is more intense in the long run because the molasses penetrates the clay of the bowl and thus the flavour also penetrates the bowl. The Japona Mummy Bowl is one of the examples of such an unglazed phunnel! However, we are not really convinced by this concept and believe that the influence is only very slight.
  • Do you want to smoke the phunnel with an HMD or with aluminium foil? Basically, all phunnels in our shop can be smoked with both setups, but there is one exception: You should not buy the HookahJohn 80ft phunnel if you plan to use a hookah smokebox. Otherwise, you have a free choice! Just look for your favourite in our hookah bowl category!
  • Do you smoke with one hose or with several hoses on one hooa?
If you share your hookah with friends using several hoses, the shisha is usually smoked more often in the same amount of time, which means that the tobacco is consumed more quickly. You should go for a phunnel with a larger tobacco deposit, such as the Oblako Phunnel L. With this, you can enjoy relaxed sessions with full flavour until the coals run out! On the other hand, if you almost always smoke alone, you should opt for one of the Hookain models or a Vandenberg v1.

✔️ Pro tip: If you smoke alone, but sometimes feel the need for a long session that lasts up to 150 minutes, we can also recommend the Oblako L, as you can light a second set of coals to enjoy the hookah for longer.
