ONMO HMD: a lot of smokebox for the money
ONMO started out as a one-product brand. Two years of development went into that first smokebox made from aluminium, and the result pulled the price of a good heat management device down. Before that, an HMD in that league cost you considerably more.
By now the single model has grown into a small line-up: two aluminium versions and two made from stainless steel. All four share the same body, what differs is the material, the base and the way the heat behaves.

The four ONMO models
The measurements are the same across the range: 7.5 cm diameter at the base, 6.6 cm at the top rim, 5.5 cm opening. What differs is the material and the base, plus a few millimetres in height.

How is the ONMO built?
The aluminium ONMO is a single cast part and is not held together by screws the way some other smokeboxes are. You notice it in the feel, and it makes cleaning easier because there are no edges where residue can collect.
Inside, the base carries a diamond profile. It keeps air moving underneath the coals so they do not go out for lack of oxygen. The basket takes two coals up to 27 mm, and the raised rim gives a third or fourth coal something to lean on. At 69 g the aluminium model stays light enough that it does not get wobbly on a high-packed bowl.
Aluminium or stainless steel?
The material question depends less on price than on your tobacco. Aluminium takes on heat quickly and releases it just as quickly. That is forgiving, because the bowl is less likely to run away from you. Stainless steel stores the heat and gets hotter overall. With wet tobaccos high in molasses that is exactly what you want, with everything else you need to check the coals more often.
On top of that, the stainless steel models have a screw-out base. You can take the HMD apart for cleaning, and the announced ONMO Steel Kits with different base plates build on it.
Tip: If you are switching from aluminium to stainless steel, start with one coal less than usual. The stainless ONMO gets noticeably hotter, and the tobacco burns before you taste it coming.
Classic or Flat?
The two stainless steel versions only differ on the underside. The Classic keeps the bar design of the aluminium model exactly as it is, so you get the same packing options you are used to. The Flat has no bars. The idea behind it: without bars the heat sits more evenly, and depending on your packing style the tobacco is less likely to scorch in one spot.
The base plates differ too. The Classic has a 0.9 mm plate that reaches 4 mm total height with the nubs, on the Flat it is 1.5 mm and 3 mm.
Which contact setup should you smoke?
Unlike the Kaloud Lotus, the ONMO has bars on the base rather than nubs. On a high-packed bowl that means you smoke on bar contact. All three setups work, though.
- Contactless: The tobacco never touches the HMD. Airflow stays open and the tobacco lasts longer, but it gives off a little less flavour.
- Bar contact: Only the bars rest on the tobacco. The middle ground, and the setup the ONMO was built for.
- Full contact: The whole underside sits on the tobacco. Maximum flavour and nicotine, and quick to become too much.
Which one suits you depends on your experience and on the hookah tobacco. As a beginner you have the easiest time contactless, because the bowl reacts more slowly and leaves you time to adjust. Dark blend on a burley base usually needs more heat than the gentler Virginia tobacco, so contact pays off there.
How do you clean the ONMO smokebox?
Best with an HMD wire brush, and only on the spots that are actually dirty. Aluminium is a soft material, too much pressure costs you the finish. On the stainless steel models you simply unscrew the base for the rougher work.
Two things to avoid with either material: putting the HMD on a coal burner to preheat or burn it out, and dropping it straight into cold water after the session. Let it cool down before you rinse it.
Which bowl goes with the ONMO?
Almost any. Nearly all hookah bowls in our range are built for heat management devices, so your choice is barely limited. For getting started, the Oblako Phunnel M and the Hookain Lit Lip both work reliably.
The best match is the in-house ONMO Primis. The phunnel holds around 13 g and is built for HMDs, so the contact surface fits without any fiddling.
