Cosmo Bowl: the traditional bowl for dark blend
Cosmo Bowl is one of the names that come up when the talk turns to strong Russian dark blend mixes. The brand's hookah bowls are well regarded by tobacco producers and in the scene, and we have genuine fans at HQ too. Then there is the price: from €14.99 you get a handmade clay bowl that holds its own in its class.
Cosmo comes out of the Russian hookah scene and has focused on one thing, getting Russian tobacco across as well as possible. According to the manufacturer, close to 50 traditional bowls from around the world were tested before development started, to compare their strengths and weaknesses. At the Hookah Club Show 2018 in Russia the brand was awarded best bowl.

What sets Cosmo bowls apart
Every bowl is made by hand from red clay of the Ural mountains. The six holes in the floor are meant to give even air circulation and heat the tobacco evenly. The thick-walled structure stores heat, which keeps the temperature more stable across the session.
The bowls are built for smokeboxes from the start. That is why the contact surface is worked flat by hand, so an HMD really does sit properly. On top of that the pores of the clay are sealed in a milk-firing process, so molasses can barely get in.
Good to know: bleeding means molasses from the hookah tobacco soaks into the pores of the clay and comes back out on the outside after longer use. The annoying part is mainly that you get your hands dirty taking the bowl off.

Which tobacco suits a Cosmo?
In countries like Russia and the Czech Republic people mostly smoke traditional bowls, because strong dark blend is what runs there and it opens up better in that shape. That is exactly what Cosmo is made for.
In our experience Darkside hookah tobacco and Must H work well, along with Blackburn and Sebero, as well as Theo. Everything else from that corner sits under dark blend hookah tobacco.
Which attachment fits?
Because Cosmo is designed for HMDs, every common smokebox works, in aluminium or in stainless steel. Among the aluminium models we recommend the ONMO HMD, which performs best for its price. If you want more heat on the bowl, go for stainless steel: the AO 912 and the Na Grani HMD are level on performance and price.
Without an HMD you stretch aluminium foil over the bowl. A classic chimney attachment does fit mechanically, but we advise against it, because you can barely control the heat that way.
How do I pack a Cosmo?
Like any traditional bowl. The tobacco drops loosely into the depot so the draw does not suffer, and you leave a small gap to the attachment. If your smokebox has nubs on the underside, light nub contact is a good guide.

Barely. The milk-firing process seals the pores of the clay, so molasses almost cannot get in. You can never rule bleeding out completely though: if you cool a hot bowl with cold water, micro-cracks can form, molasses gets into the material and comes back out later.
