Hookah accessories: everything you need to smoke
Without the right accessories you can forget about smoking your hookah. A hose, a mouthpiece, a bowl and a few more parts are simply required before anything happens at all. This category holds everything you need to get started.
On top of that come the items you do not strictly need but that make everyday hookah life noticeably easier. You will find both here, the must-haves as well as the practical extras.
- Must-haves are the bowl, a bowl attachment, charcoal, a lighter, tongs, a hose, a mouthpiece and tobacco
- Nice-to-haves save time and nerves but are optional
- Check what already comes with your hookah before you order
- A set takes the decision off your hands, because everything fits together
Must-haves and nice-to-haves
To make the choice easier, we split the range into two groups:
- Must-have: without these items you cannot start smoking at all
- Nice-to-have: purely additional products that make life with the hookah easier
Below we go through both groups so you can see what you really need and what mainly saves you work.
The must-haves
Besides the hookah itself, you need these parts for a session to happen:
- charcoal burner
- charcoal tongs
- hookah bowl
- smokebox
- hookah mouthpiece
- hookah hose
- hookah tobacco or a tobacco substitute
- hookah charcoal
If one of them is missing, things get difficult. So check carefully before ordering what already came with your hookah and what you have at home. That way you do not order anything twice and still do not end up without tongs.
With the mouthpiece the function is much the same everywhere, so what decides it is what you like and how it feels on your lips.
Everything at once: hookah with an accessory set
Just starting out and would rather order everything in one go? Then take a complete set. It contains the hookah, the bowl, the bowl attachment, a mouthpiece and a hose, and depending on the bundle also tongs and more.
The current sets and bundles are here:
The nice-to-haves
You do not strictly need the following items to smoke. They do take work off your hands day to day though.
Cooling the smoke with the Ice Bazooka
One mouthpiece with a function of its own is the Ice Bazooka. A cooling pack goes into the mouthpiece and the smoke cools down as it passes through. The pack is included with the purchase.
Carrying the charcoal more safely
A charcoal basket is not mandatory, but it makes handling glowing charcoal a lot more relaxed. You carry the charcoal from the burner to the hookah in one go. It works with tongs too, only then a piece ends up on the carpet more often.
Coasters and mats
Among the coasters there are several variants with quite different jobs:
- Bowl coasters: protect the underside of the glass base from scratches caused by small particles between tabletop and glass. They also round off the setup visually.
- Bowl packing mats: keep tobacco off the table while you pack. You can simply put them in the sink and wash off tobacco and molasses residue.
- Drying mats: put your hookah parts on them to dry after cleaning. With a towel you cannot reach many of the spots anyway.
- Drying mats as bowl storage: bowls often still release molasses that soaked into the clay. On a mat your cupboard shelf stays clean.
By the way: alongside the bowl coasters there are drink coasters in the same style.
Practical things for packing
The right bowl packing accessories make packing easier. The mats from the previous section belong to that, and a few more parts come on top.
With a fork and a poker you keep your fingers clean while packing. You place the tobacco in the bowl with the fork and spread it with the poker until the pack sits right. The poker also works for punching holes if you smoke with foil.
Speaking of which: alongside the smokebox and the chimney top, aluminium foil is still a popular option for packing. Foil made specifically for hookahs is thicker than the kitchen drawer kind and does not tear as quickly.
And if you pack a phunnel, a phunnel plug is worth it. It sits in the hole of the tobacco well so no tobacco falls through, gets stuck and comes loose later while you smoke. When that happens, the water turns brown immediately.
Accessories for more hygiene
Hygiene is not a side topic when smoking, which is why there is a dedicated range for hookah cleaning.
When smoking together a hygiene mouthpiece helps. You can choose between disposable ones and personal ones, both prevent diseases from being passed on.
- Disposable hygiene mouthpieces fit when different people smoke at your place often. They are made of plastic and get thrown away after a single use.
- Personal hygiene mouthpieces pay off when you mostly smoke with the same people. You invest once, produce no plastic waste, and they feel considerably better on the lips.
Tip: personal hygiene mouthpieces are washable. So run them under the tap every now and then.
The second hygiene factor is the hookah itself, which you should clean regularly. For that there are brushes in two directions: soft, flexible ones for the glass base and hard, stiff ones for stubborn dirt, on the smokebox for example.
On top of that come cleaning agents for different jobs. Depending on what you prefer, you take the powder cleaner or the spray.
Colour in the glass base
When guests are over and you want to put on a show, you can colour the water. The Xschischa bowl colours are made for hookahs, which is what makes them suitable. Unlike a lot of supermarket food colouring they come without additives such as sugar that leave your glass base sticky. You can pick the Sparkles with glitter particles or the Candy Colours, which give the water a solid colour.
Even more looks: if you want to lift the whole appearance, have a look at the Caesar Crystal glass bases.

FAQ: hookah accessories
What do you need for a hookah?
Besides the hookah itself you need a bowl, a matching bowl attachment such as an HMD or aluminium foil, charcoal, a charcoal lighter, tongs, a hose, a mouthpiece and tobacco or a tobacco substitute.
Which hookah accessories are really necessary?
The must-haves are a charcoal lighter, tongs, a bowl, an HMD or aluminium foil, a hose, a mouthpiece, charcoal and tobacco. Charcoal baskets, packing mats and cleaning accessories are additions that make daily use easier but are not needed to smoke at all.
Which is better, HMD or aluminium foil?
For most people an HMD is the more sensible choice. It makes packing easier, heat management more predictable, and lowers the risk of the tobacco burning too quickly. Aluminium foil is mainly used today by beginners and anyone on a very small budget. If you smoke regularly, get an HMD. Even affordable aluminium HMDs such as the ONMO Alu work reliably. For dark blend or higher temperatures, experienced smokers often reach for stainless steel HMDs such as the ONMO Stainless Steel.
Which accessories make packing easier?
Packing mats, a fork, a poker and an HMD. With fork and poker you portion and spread the tobacco without dirtying your hands or the table. The HMD simply goes on top of the bowl, so stretching foil and punching holes fall away. For phunnel bowls a phunnel plug comes on top.
How often should hookah accessories be cleaned?
Regularly, so the flavour does not suffer and no residue builds up. The glass base, stem, hoses, HMD and mouthpieces should get a thorough clean after several sessions. Special brushes and hookah cleaners are made for that.
Does every accessory fit every hookah?
That depends. A lot is universal, above all bowls, hoses, charcoal accessories, tobacco accessories, coasters, mats, mouthpieces and hygiene mouthpieces. With glass bases you have to look more closely: it has to match the size of your hookah, and it makes a difference whether you need a plug-in or a screw-on base. When in doubt, take original accessories from the manufacturer and compare the technical data in the product descriptions.
