Prefilled or open pod: what is the difference?
Both systems consist of a mod and a pod. The difference is who fills the pod.

Prefilled pod systems
Here you buy the vape mod once and only pods after that. The pods come filled with nicotine salt liquid, you click one in on top and draw on the mouthpiece, that is all there is to it.
Elfa has three devices. The classic Elfa mod runs on 500 mAh and comes without a display. The Elfa Master has 850 mAh and adjusts between 9 and 18 watts, with a readout for battery level and resistance. The Elfa Turbo has 550 mAh, works between 15 and 18 watts and takes the Turbo pods and Lost Mary Tappo alongside the Elfa pods. The mods from Flerbar and the Al Massiva mod work on the same principle. All of them charge via USB-C.

Open pod systems
With an open system you fill the pod yourself. That works out cheaper over time, because one 10 ml bottle of liquid fills a pod several times, and you are not tied to whatever flavours the device maker offers.

The matching replacement pods hold 3 ml and have a mesh coil inside. Depending on the device you can pick a resistance between 0.4 and 0.9 ohm. The lower the value, the more vapour and the warmer the draw.
ElfX Pro pod battery carrier: 1200 mAh, 5 to 45 watts and a colour display. You set the draw mode and the airflow yourself, and it fills from the top.

The liquids come in 10 ml bottles and are built for pod systems: nicotine salt, a 50/50 mix of glycerin and propylene glycol, and a draw made for MTL. At 20 mg nicotine per ml, coils around 0.8 ohm suit them best and keep the draw smooth.
Elfliq and RandM Tornado come at 20 mg per ml. ByCandy has every flavour in 10 and 20 mg, so you can start lower there.

PG, VG and the coil explained
A liquid is basically propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. Propylene glycol carries the flavour and produces the slight scratch in the throat that smokers know as the throat hit. Glycerin is thicker and makes the vapour denser. A 50/50 mix sits right between the two, which is why it suits small pod devices.
The coil, meaning the heating element inside the pod, wears out. It holds a heating wire and cotton. Once the flavour fades or starts to taste slightly burnt, the pod is due. Depending on how you vape and which liquid you use, a coil lasts one to three weeks.

What suits you if you are switching from cigarettes?
For switching, the draw matters most. MTL stands for mouth to lung: you pull the vapour into your mouth first and then into your lungs, the way you would on a cigarette. DL stands for direct lung and goes straight into the lungs, closer to a hookah. Every pod system here is built for MTL, and the ElfX Pro also switches to RDL and DL.
For nicotine strength the range has 10 and 20 mg per ml. In the EU a liquid may not contain more than 20 mg per ml. Nicotine salt scratches less than classic nicotine at the same strength, which is why pod liquids nearly always use salts.
Why reusable instead of disposable?
A reusable device pays for itself quickly. The Elfa mod costs €7.99, a two-pack of prefilled pods also costs €7.99, and a 10 ml bottle of liquid starts from €8.90. So all you buy again is the liquid or the pod, while the battery stays.
Then there is the waste. With a disposable device the whole battery goes in the bin after a few hundred puffs, while a pod system simply goes back on the USB-C cable.
Vape or hookah?
The two have little in common beyond the fact that something gets vaporised. A vape heats liquid electrically, a hookah works with charcoal and tobacco. You carry a vape around and take a puff between other things, while a hookah is more of an evening with a few people around it.

Is vaping a good alternative to smoking?
For many smokers vaping is an alternative, because no tobacco burns and only liquid gets heated. On top of that you get a wide choice of flavours and you pick the nicotine strength yourself. How vape and cigarette compare in health terms is covered in a separate article.
What is the difference between MTL and DL vaping?

Why do I cough when vaping and what can I do about it?
That happens a lot at the start. Usually it comes down to drawing too hard, too much nicotine or a high share of propylene glycol in the liquid. Draw slower and softer than on a cigarette and try a lower nicotine strength, which sorts it out for most people.
How does an e-cigarette work?
It consists of a battery, a pod or tank for the liquid and a coil. The cotton in the coil soaks up liquid, the heating wire warms it, and the vapour forms. Nothing burns in the process.
What is the difference between a pod system and an e-cigarette?
E-cigarette is the umbrella term for all vaping devices. Pod systems are a particularly compact form of them and work with replaceable or refillable pods. That makes them easier to handle than larger devices with a tank and swappable batteries.
