You want to treat yourself to your first vape in our Moze online shop, but have no idea what all the numbers and terms actually mean? 600 puffs, 20 mg nicotine, 2 ml liquid. Don’t stress – we know that switching from classic tobacco to vapes often starts with a lot of question marks.
The answer to the cigarette equivalence seems simple, but is technically and biologically more complex than what is written on the colorful packaging of disposable devices. In this article, we show you why, with the right setup – such as a sustainable pod system – you can save a small fortune compared to smoking, and how to optimize your personal vaping experience.
What you can expect here
The rule of thumb: puffs vs. cigarettesNicotine content: why 20 mg is not the same as 20 mgThe secret of bioavailability & nicotine saltThe cost check: who saves the most?Health: what you do NOT inhaleWhat to critically consider about e-cigarettesTo precisely answer the question “How many cigarettes is one vape?”, we first need to analyze the “opponent”.
While cigarette packs list values for tar and nicotine, information about actual usage duration is usually completely missing.
On average, a smoker takes about 10 to 15 puffs from a cigarette before reaching the filter. However, this varies greatly depending on packing density and individual smoking behavior. For a realistic comparison, it therefore makes sense to calculate with an average value of 12 puffs per cigarette.
Most disposable e-cigarettes and e-cigarettes approved in Germany are limited to a maximum of 2 ml of liquid due to the TPD2 regulation. Nevertheless, manufacturers advertise different puff numbers. Here is the result of our calculation:
| Vape model | Puffs | Cigarette equivalent | Pack equivalent (20s) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic vape | 300 puffs | approx. 25 cigarettes | approx. 1.2 packs |
| Standard (e.g. Elfbar) | 600 puffs | approx. 50 cigarettes | approx. 2.5 packs |
| Larger vape | 700 puffs | approx. 58 cigarettes | approx. 3.0 packs |
| Maxi vape | 999 puffs | approx. 83 cigarettes | approx. 4.1 packs |
The reality check: These figures are laboratory values. In a direct comparison between cigarettes and vapes, it becomes clear that users who take deep lung hits (direct lung) consume the device much faster. Realistically, many people get closer to 400 to 500 solid puffs from a 600-puff vape.
Still, with a single vape you are holding the usage volume of an entire weekend in your hand. Please note that both disposable vapes and regular vapes must never be disposed of in household waste after use, as they contain a battery.
The number of puffs is one thing, the effective nicotine consumption another.
Purely in quantitative terms, the vape often contains even less nicotine than the amount of cigarettes it theoretically replaces. However, the way the nicotine is absorbed differs fundamentally.
When smoking, nicotine reaches the brain very quickly through combustion. When vaping, absorption occurs mainly through the mucous membranes, which is why the rise in nicotine levels is often perceived as gentler. The curve in the blood plasma rises more smoothly, but often lasts for a longer period.
Especially with modern pod systems using nicotine salt, this gentle perception can influence consumption behavior.
Nicotine salt is perceived as particularly mild because it irritates the throat less than classic freebase nicotine. This characteristic can lead to more frequent or longer vaping without the body sending a clear early warning signal.
Especially for new users, the rapid nicotine absorption can make unintentional overdosing more likely. Possible signs include dizziness, nausea, heart palpitations, or cold sweats (nicotine flash). With regularly high consumption, nicotine tolerance also increases, which significantly promotes the development of dependence.
Note: Especially at the beginning, it is advisable to consciously take breaks and pay attention to physical reactions.
Comparing the costs of cigarettes with the costs of vaping leaves no doubt that vaping is the better deal.We compare the monthly costs (basis: 1 pack per day):
| System | Monthly consumption | Cost per month |
|---|---|---|
| Tobacco cigarette | 30 packs | approx. €240 |
| Disposable vape | 15 units (600 puffs each) | approx. €120 – €150 |
| Pod system (e.g. Elfa pod system) | 5 bottles of liquid + pods | approx. €35 |
Savings: With a refillable pod system you can save over €200 per month!

No combustion takes place when vaping. As a result, neither tar nor carbon monoxide is produced – two of the most harmful components of cigarette smoke.
This aspect is often cited as an advantage over classic cigarettes. Nevertheless, it is important not to view vaping exclusively from this perspective.
Even though certain harmful substances are not produced when vaping, there are aspects that should be considered consciously and in a differentiated way – especially with regard to additives and consumption behavior.
To keep nicotine salt stable and easily inhalable in liquids, organic acids such as benzoic acid or levulinic acid are used. These substances are known from other areas of application and are considered well researched when ingested orally.
However, there are currently no comprehensive long-term studies on the long-term inhalation of these substances. What effects long-term inhalation over many years may have has not yet been conclusively clarified scientifically.
This does not automatically mean a health risk, but it does show that this is an area for which robust long-term data is still lacking.
Due to the limited data available, there are still many question marks when it comes to the long-term effects of vaping.Vapes can be an alternative to classic cigarettes for adult smokers. However, conscious use of the product is crucial.
Due to the smooth draw and easy availability, vaping can develop from clearly defined consumption phases into constant, incidental use for some users. This can increase nicotine intake and promote the risk of developing dependence.
Responsible enjoyment consumption therefore means:
Mathematically, a 600-puff vape replaces about 2 to 2.5 packs of cigarettes. It is therefore an efficient and compact substitute, especially for on the go.
For heavy smokers, we recommend 20 mg/ml nicotine salt. This nicotine strength provides a comparable hit to classic cigarettes. Lower strengths often increase the risk of relapse.
Yes. There are high-quality e-liquids on the market, for example from EXVAPE, which were specifically developed as alternatives for tobacco fans and replicate classic tobacco flavor very well.
Purely in terms of usage duration, yes. However, a nicotine-free vape lacks the saturation effect. As a result, many users take more frequent puffs, causing the device to empty more quickly subjectively.
Yes. Most standard pods hold 2 ml of liquid. At a nicotine strength of 20 mg/ml, one tank corresponds to about 50 cigarettes. A 10 ml bottle of liquid therefore replaces approximately 10 to 12 packs.
No. Thanks to draw activation, handling is almost identical. For switchers, only the draw technique is new: instead of short, strong puffs, you should inhale longer and more gently. After about 3 to 7 days, the body usually adapts, and classic tobacco smoke quickly becomes unattractive.
In our online shop, you will find several pod systems such as the Elf Bar pod system (Elfa) in various versions, as well as the PIXL. The vape range will continue to be expanded in the future.
