Vandenberg: bowls made by hand in Germany
Behind Vandenberg stands the same producer as behind the tobacco brands Kismet, XRacher and Odinson. The hookah bowls are made in Germany, in a high-temperature firing process and from clay to match.
That is what defines them: the material comes out very dense, and the advantages below follow from it. Because they are produced by hand, every bowl comes with a certificate of authenticity. Vandenberg bowls cost a bit more than others, and you notice the difference.

What sets Vandenberg bowls apart
The high firing temperature makes the clay so dense that molasses from the hookah tobacco practically stops getting in. Bleeding is no longer an issue.
Good to know: bleeding means molasses soaks into the porous clay of the bowl and after a while comes back out on the outside, because too much of it has gathered in the material.
Glazes with different properties
According to the manufacturer the colours are not just cosmetic. The matte glazes are said to hold the heat longer and pass less of it to the tobacco, which makes the session run longer. The glossy ones are said to pass more heat straight through and heat the tobacco harder.
In our experience the differences are on the small side. So we suggest going by looks and taking the bowl that suits your hookah.
Which models are there?
Vandenberg V1
The V1 is a phunnel with an 18 to 20 g depot. It suits you if you smoke on one hose and want the session long and full of flavour. With several hoses on one hookah it still works, and you can light a second set of hookah charcoal after the first.
Vandenberg V3 and V3-C
The V3 is not a phunnel but a traditional bowl. A 16 to 18 g depot, around 290 g of weight and German handwork as well. The V3-C is the variant of the same model. Both play to their strengths with strong dark blend, and if you are coming from the V1, remember that a traditional bowl wants a gentler pull.
How to use a Vandenberg bowl
The V1 is packed like any other phunnel, the slightly special shape of the depot only makes for small differences. The tobacco goes around the hole, and you leave a narrow gap free at the outer edge of the depot.
Which attachment fits?
Every common smokebox. In aluminium that includes the ONMO HMD, the Kaloud Lotus and the AO HMD, in stainless steel the AO 912 or the Na Grani HMD.
You can also stretch heavy-duty aluminium foil over the bowl and place the coals on top. A chimney attachment does not work on a Vandenberg.
