Especially as a beginner, it can be tough to choose a hookah (also known as a shisha or waterpipe). That’s exactly why we created this short guide for you. With its help, it’ll be easier to find the best hookah for your individual needs!

To find out which hookah suits you best, you should be able to answer at least these three questions in advance:

What You Should Know About a Hookah

A hookah has only a minimal influence on the flavor of the tobacco smoke. Flavor is primarily affected by the quality of the shisha tobacco, the bowl, the HMD, how you pack the bowl, and the amount of heat applied.

The primary function of a hookah is to transport the smoke from the bowl to your mouth. So the rule is: the smaller the hookah, the more direct the draw and the denser the smoke. With a larger hookah, you have to draw more air to get the smoke. But if you like to pull or blow hard into your hookah, a small model might cause water to splash up or flood the bowl.

Therefore, you should choose your hookah based on your smoking style—and vice versa.

What a hookah really must do is seal tightly between the base and the glass base. If it doesn’t, air from the outside gets in, which significantly worsens the smoking experience. If the pipe is airtight (which every hookah should be), then the most important requirement for a perfect session is already met.

There is a lot of variation when it comes to draw. Draw refers to the airflow through the pipe. Depending on how the hookah is designed, the airflow can be light or resistant. If air flows easily with little resistance, we call it an “open draw.” This is great if you like smoking light shisha tobacco in a phunnel. If you’re looking for the classic "tradi" feel, you’ll want a hookah with a bit more resistance—this is especially common in traditional bowl setups.

How Many Hose Ports Does a Good Hookah Need?

In general, the number of hose ports you prefer is a matter of personal taste. In our opinion, a hookah works best with just one hose port.

Why Is a Single-Hose Hookah Often the Better Choice?

If you want to get the most flavor out of your hookah session, it’s especially important that the tobacco in the bowl is evenly heated – and that works best with a hookah that has just one hose port.

Why? Simple:

• Each pull on the hose heats the air as it passes the hot charcoal. This intensifies the embers, heats up the smokebox more, and increases the temperature of the tobacco.
• When several people smoke in quick succession – as is the case with a multi-hose hookah – the temperature in the bowl rises quickly. This can lead to a heat shock, which negatively affects the flavor.
• Another downside of a multi-hose pipe is that everyone pulls with different intensity, which leads to uneven heat distribution.
• A big plus for a single-hose hookah is that the blow-off can be used without restrictions, since there’s no valve ball in the way. This improves airflow, is more hygienic, and makes it easier to purge stale smoke.

But There Are Also Advantages to Multiple Hose Ports

If you often smoke with friends, it’s definitely more relaxed when everyone has their own hose. No annoying hose-passing and no long wait until it's your turn again. You can also achieve this by simply using several single-hose hookahs instead of one with multiple ports. Everyone can enjoy their favorite tobacco at their own pace.

The downsides, however, are more cleaning effort, higher consumption of tobacco and charcoal, and of course, higher costs. But you also don’t have to compromise on tobacco choice.

Plug-In System – Unstable or Actually the Better Choice?

A common criticism of plug-in systems used to be that the hookah didn’t sit firmly in the glass base. But with our models, you don’t have to worry. Each set includes two base grommets with different diameters – one of which fits extra snug and ensures stability. So wobbling is a thing of the past.

You may have heard this:
“With screw-thread hookahs, you can carry them by the stem.”
That might sound convenient, but it’s not a good idea. A water-filled base is heavy. Carrying the hookah by the stem puts a lot of strain on the joints. Over time, this can loosen the glue between the thread and the base, causing the glass to fall and break.

The Advantages of Plug-In Systems at a Glance

• Standardized Diameter:Plug-in glass bases always have a 45 mm neck. That means you can always find a replacement if your bowl breaks – no matter the manufacturer.
• More Flexibility: If you own multiple plug-in hookahs, you can swap the bowls between them. That makes for quick and easy variety.

How Important Is the Size of the Hookah?

A common myth is that small hookahs produce less smoke than large hookahs. That’s complete nonsense because the amount of smoke a hookah produces depends solely on the bowl, the HMD, and how you pack it.

A small hookah is great for taking with you to friends' houses or events. It’s also easier to clean since the parts are smaller and your cleaning accessories can reach into every corner. Especially if you have a small sink, cleaning a large hookah can be difficult.

If you enjoy smoking hookah while watching a series or movie, small hookahs are again a great choice. You can place them on the coffee table without obstructing your view. That said, many of our customers simply find larger hookahs more aesthetically pleasing than smaller ones.

Ultimately, the size of your hookah comes down to personal taste, and you should mainly decide based on appearance. Apart from the practical considerations mentioned above, there are no major downsides. What’s the Best Material for Hookahs? Does It Have to Be Stainless Steel?

Hookahs are usually made of materials like chrome-plated steel, brass, aluminum, or stainless steel. There are also decorative elements like POM, epoxy resin, acrylic, wood, glass, ABS, or carbon – these look great but don’t affect performance or smoke quality.

When it comes to the main components of a hookah, we clearly recommend: go with stainless steel if you want long-lasting quality.

Why Stainless Steel?

Because the other materials have clear disadvantages:

• Chrome-plated steel: Quickly builds up limescale, especially on threads. After a few months, you might struggle to take it apart. You’ll spend a lot of time cleaning it to keep it working.
• Brass: Tends to tarnish and stain over time. It won’t look nice anymore unless you polish it regularly.
• Aluminum: Quite soft. Threads can warp or bend with impact or over time – not ideal if you want your hookah to last.

Stainless steel has none of those issues. It’s durable, low-maintenance, and remains reliable for years.

That’s why you’ll find only stainless steel hookahs in our shop – because we want you to enjoy your hookah for a long time without worrying about limescale, rust, or damaged threads.

What Accessories Are Included in the Set?

Depending on the model, certain or even all essential accessories may be included to get you started. For example, with the Amotion FUTR, you only need a bowl, HMD, and charcoal/tools – or just an XKAH Pro – and you’re ready to enjoy your favorite tobacco.

With other models, accessories are only partially included, so you may need to purchase some additional items – especially if you’re just starting out and don’t yet own any hookah accessories at home.

So when buying your hookah, always check what’s included to avoid the mistake of ending up with a hookah that’s incomplete and can’t yet be used.

The blow-off is simply the act of purging – blowing out stale smoke from the base of your hookah.

Why is this important?

If no one takes a puff for a while, the smoke in the base loses flavor. A quick blow into the hose pushes this old smoke out – so the next puff is full of fresh, flavorful smoke directly from the bowl.
