Hookah / Shisha Test – Which Is the Best Hookah in 2026?
Last updated on 01/09/2026 | Reading time approx. 13:05 min

Quick Summary of the Article
There is no “best hookah” for everyone – the choice always depends on your personal preferences. Several criteria are important before buying. These include technical features like the number of hoses, the blow-off system, or the type of connection. Design and size are also crucial – whether you prefer something simple or flashy, compact or large. Of course, your budget also plays a role: Good models are available from around €80.
Depending on your needs, different recommendations apply. For travel, a compact and durable travel hookah like the AMOTION Roam is ideal. If design is important to you, customizable and eye-catching models like the Moze Varity are a great choice. If you're looking for a real all-rounder, go for versatile and high-quality models like the Moze Breeze Two.
Hookahs with just one hose are often better suited if flavor and heat control are your priorities. Plug-in systems offer more flexibility and make it easier to get replacement parts. Stainless steel is recommended as the material – it's durable, low-maintenance, and sturdy. Blow-off systems also provide an impressive purging effect and fresh smoke. And if you're new to hookah, complete sets are ideal since they often include all essential accessories.

Let’s get one thing straight: the claim that there is a universally “best” hookah is, of course, utter nonsense. Just like with most things in life, there’s no single solution that fits every need.
Especially as a beginner, it can be tough to choose a hookah (also known as a shisha or waterpipe). That’s exactly why we created this short guide for you. With its help, it’ll be easier to find the best hookah for your individual needs!
To find out which hookah suits you best, you should be able to answer at least these three questions in advance:
- What technical features should the hookah have?
- What look do you prefer / is the look even important to you?
- How much do you want to invest in your hobby?
Let’s now go over what you should consider when buying a hookah and how to find the best one for you.
Hookah Test: The Best Hookahs
As with everything in life, there are no blanket answers that apply to everyone. If you want the best hookah for your needs, you first need to understand what your needs actually are. Only then can you make an informed decision. To help you with that, let’s first take a look at some general needs in the hookah world. After that, making a choice will be much easier.
If that sounds like too much effort and you just want a quick recommendation, here are our top “fast-track” suggestions:
- Moze Breeze Two
The Breeze Two is a true all-rounder! High-quality craftsmanship combined with a wide range of features – all at an affordable price. Plus, this model comes in many color options. - AMOTION Roam
If you don’t want to spend a lot and enjoy taking your hookah on the go, the AMOTION Roam is the perfect choice! Available in several attractive colors, it also features the most beautiful blow-off of any travel hookah. - Moze Varity
Looking for a larger hookah, perhaps even one with four hose connections? Then check out the Moze Varity. This waterpipe offers you maximum flexibility – you can choose between a screw or plug-in glass base, adjust the length of the stem and downstem, and even customize the position of the blow-off rings. - AMOTION FUTR
Want a stylish hookah without too much fuss, that draws like butter and already includes most accessories? Then the AMOTION FUTR is just right for you. The FUTR comes with a hose, mouthpiece, and all necessary seals included. All you need is a bowl, HMD, charcoal + charcoal tools (or just an XKAH Pro instead), tobacco – and you're ready to go. Like the Roam, the FUTR comes in a variety of colors, and many of our customers love its open draw.
What You Should Know About a Hookah
Our goal is for you to know exactly what your new hookah should offer by the end of this article. Let’s start with the basics. A hookah has only a minimal influence on the flavor of the tobacco smoke. Flavor is primarily affected by the quality of the shisha tobacco, the bowl, the HMD, how you pack the bowl, and the amount of heat applied.
The primary function of a hookah is to transport the smoke from the bowl to your mouth. So the rule is: the smaller the hookah, the more direct the draw and the denser the smoke. With a larger hookah, you have to draw more air to get the smoke. But if you like to pull or blow hard into your hookah, a small model might cause water to splash up or flood the bowl.
Therefore, you should choose your hookah based on your smoking style—and vice versa.
What a hookah really must do is seal tightly between the base and the glass base. If it doesn’t, air from the outside gets in, which significantly worsens the smoking experience. If the pipe is airtight (which every hookah should be), then the most important requirement for a perfect session is already met.
There is a lot of variation when it comes to draw. Draw refers to the airflow through the pipe. Depending on how the hookah is designed, the airflow can be light or resistant. If air flows easily with little resistance, we call it an “open draw.” This is great if you like smoking light shisha tobacco in a phunnel. If you’re looking for the classic "tradi" feel, you’ll want a hookah with a bit more resistance—this is especially common in traditional bowl setups.
Almost all of our pipes feature a fairly open draw, giving both phunnel and traditional bowl users a great smoking experience.

The Moze Breeze Pro
Our Standards for Hookahs
We love hookahs and have been active members of the hookah community for years. It’s important to us that our in-house Moze and Amotion hookahs are technically and visually high-quality and functional. That’s why all our models are thoroughly tested by us and only go into production when we’re completely satisfied with the result. This means you can be sure that Moze and Amotion hookahs perform reliably.
So in the end, it’s all about finding the model that suits you best. Once you know which features are important to you, you’ll find all the suitable models in the different hookah categories. At the end of this article, we’ve also put together tables with the most important technical details of our most popular hookahs. This makes it easy for you to compare models and find the perfect hookah for you.
What Makes a Technically Good Hookah?
Before you decide on a model, it’s worth looking at the technical specs. These include things like how many hose connections the hookah has or whether it uses a screw or plug-in system. We’ll look at these aspects in more detail in the next sections so you know exactly what matters.

Left: Moze Varity Squad with 4 hose ports, right: Moze Varity Lounge with one hose port
How Many Hose Ports Does a Good Hookah Need?
In general, the number of hose ports you prefer is a matter of personal taste. In our opinion, a hookah works best with just one hose port.
Why Is a Single-Hose Hookah Often the Better Choice?
If you want to get the most flavor out of your hookah session, it’s especially important that the tobacco in the bowl is evenly heated – and that works best with a hookah that has just one hose port.
Why? Simple:
- Each pull on the hose heats the air as it passes the hot charcoal. This intensifies the embers, heats up the smokebox more, and increases the temperature of the tobacco.
- When several people smoke in quick succession – as is the case with a multi-hose hookah – the temperature in the bowl rises quickly. This can lead to a heat shock, which negatively affects the flavor.
- Another downside of a multi-hose pipe is that everyone pulls with different intensity, which leads to uneven heat distribution.
- A big plus for a single-hose hookah is that the blow-off can be used without restrictions, since there’s no valve ball in the way. This improves airflow, is more hygienic, and makes it easier to purge stale smoke.
But There Are Also Advantages to Multiple Hose Ports
If you often smoke with friends, it’s definitely more relaxed when everyone has their own hose. No annoying hose-passing and no long wait until it's your turn again. You can also achieve this by simply using several single-hose hookahs instead of one with multiple ports. Everyone can enjoy their favorite tobacco at their own pace.
The downsides, however, are more cleaning effort, higher consumption of tobacco and charcoal, and of course, higher costs. But you also don’t have to compromise on tobacco choice.
Our Tip:
If you mostly smoke alone or with one other person, but want to be prepared when friends spontaneously drop by, just get a second small hookah – for example, the Amotion RoamTravel Hookah. It's compact, takes up little space, is ready to use quickly, and easy to take with you – perfect for travel or small sessions. Best of all: it looks great, is well-made, and doesn’t cost a fortune.
| Single-Hose Hookah | 4-Hose Hookah |
|---|---|
| Easy heat management | More economical tobacco and charcoal use |
| Longer hookah sessions | Less cleaning effort |
| Everyone smokes their favorite tobacco | |
| Unrestricted use of the blow-off |
Plug-In or Screw Connection – Which Is Better?
We often get asked: Should a hookah have a screw or a plug-in connection?
We’ve thought this through for a long time – and honestly: there’s hardly any real advantage to the screw system.
Some say screw connections feel more premium. That may have been true in the past – when plug-in seals often weren’t the best. But that’s long gone!
With the Moze Perfect Fit Seals, you get a top-notch solution that not only seals perfectly but also looks great – and comes in various colors!
All Moze models come equipped with black, anthracite, or gray Perfect Fit seals. And Amotion models like the Amotion FUTR also include color-matching seals right out of the box.
You’ll also find these seals sold separately in the Hookah Accessories > Seals section of our shop.
Plug-In System – Unstable or Actually the Better Choice?
A common criticism of plug-in systems used to be that the hookah didn’t sit firmly in the glass base. But with our models, you don’t have to worry. Each set includes two base grommets with different diameters – one of which fits extra snug and ensures stability. So wobbling is a thing of the past.
You may have heard this:
“With screw-thread hookahs, you can carry them by the stem.”
That might sound convenient, but it’s not a good idea. A water-filled base is heavy. Carrying the hookah by the stem puts a lot of strain on the joints. Over time, this can loosen the glue between the thread and the base, causing the glass to fall and break.
The Advantages of Plug-In Systems at a Glance
- Standardized Diameter:Plug-in glass bases always have a 45 mm neck. That means you can always find a replacement if your bowl breaks – no matter the manufacturer.
- More Flexibility: If you own multiple plug-in hookahs, you can swap the bowls between them. That makes for quick and easy variety.
- Large Selection of Bowls: In our plug-in bowl category, you’ll find loads of standard and Caesar bowls. If you ever get tired of your current bowl’s design, just get a new one – and your hookah will feel brand new.
How Important Is the Size of the Hookah?
A common myth is that small hookahs produce less smoke than large hookahs. That’s complete nonsense because the amount of smoke a hookah produces depends solely on the bowl, the HMD, and how you pack it.
A small hookah is great for taking with you to friends' houses or events. It’s also easier to clean since the parts are smaller and your cleaning accessories can reach into every corner. Especially if you have a small sink, cleaning a large hookah can be difficult.
If you enjoy smoking hookah while watching a series or movie, small hookahs are again a great choice. You can place them on the coffee table without obstructing your view. That said, many of our customers simply find larger hookahs more aesthetically pleasing than smaller ones.
Ultimately, the size of your hookah comes down to personal taste, and you should mainly decide based on appearance. Apart from the practical considerations mentioned above, there are no major downsides. So if you prefer the look of a large hookah, just keep those points in mind and make sure they’re not an issue for you.
What’s the Best Material for Hookahs? Does It Have to Be Stainless Steel?
Hookahs are usually made of materials like chrome-plated steel, brass, aluminum, or stainless steel. There are also decorative elements like POM, epoxy resin, acrylic, wood, glass, ABS, or carbon – these look great but don’t affect performance or smoke quality.
When it comes to the main components of a hookah, we clearly recommend: go with stainless steel if you want long-lasting quality.
Why Stainless Steel?
Because the other materials have clear disadvantages:
- Chrome-plated steel: Quickly builds up limescale, especially on threads. After a few months, you might struggle to take it apart. You’ll spend a lot of time cleaning it to keep it working.
- Brass: Tends to tarnish and stain over time. It won’t look nice anymore unless you polish it regularly.
- Aluminum: Quite soft. Threads can warp or bend with impact or over time – not ideal if you want your hookah to last.
Stainless steel has none of those issues. It’s durable, low-maintenance, and remains reliable for years.
That’s why you’ll find only stainless steel hookahs in our shop – because we want you to enjoy your hookah for a long time without worrying about limescale, rust, or damaged threads.
What Accessories Are Included in the Set?
Depending on the model, certain or even all essential accessories may be included to get you started. For example, with the Amotion FUTR, you only need a bowl, HMD, and charcoal/tools – or just an XKAH Pro – and you’re ready to enjoy your favorite tobacco.
With other models, accessories are only partially included, so you may need to purchase some additional items – especially if you’re just starting out and don’t yet own any hookah accessories at home.
So when buying your hookah, always check what’s included to avoid the mistake of ending up with a hookah that’s incomplete and can’t yet be used.
You’ll also find a table with the included accessories for each featured hookah further down in the article.
Hookah AccessoriesMany of our hookah models are also available as complete bundle sets. These sets include everything you need to get started! We highly recommend these bundles for beginners because the total cost is lower than buying each item separately.
The Perfect Look – What to Consider
When it comes to the design of your hookah, your personal taste matters even more than the technical specs we’ve covered. The style: Do you prefer a minimalist hookah or a bold, extravagant one? Are you looking for a simple setup or something that really stands out?

Motorsport-themed hookah with a bold design: The Amotion Valve
If you're looking for a minimalist model, you'll likely prefer those with a uniform color scheme. In our opinion, this includes the Moze Varity in the Steel versions, as well as the Varity in the Original Black version. With the Moze Breeze, the Original Black, Wavy Black, and Wavy Frosted colorways are relatively understated.
If you're after a sleek travel hookah, take a closer look at the Amotion Roam.

The travel set of the AMOTION Roam Travel Hookah gives you plenty of space for all your hookah accessories.
Looking for something truly unique? Then you should check out the Amotion Flash Bang – inspired by a futuristic flash grenade. Other bold options include the Amotion Valve, Amotion FUTR, and the Candy Line colorways of the Moze Breeze Pro.
Hookah Blow-Off – What Should Yours Look Like?
The blow-off is simply the act of purging – blowing out stale smoke from the base of your hookah.
Why is this important?
If no one takes a puff for a while, the smoke in the base loses flavor. A quick blow into the hose pushes this old smoke out – so the next puff is full of fresh, flavorful smoke directly from the bowl.
Another bonus: this purge (or blow-off) can look really cool, with the smoke exiting from different parts of the hookah, creating stunning effects.
Blow-Off Options in Our Models
Some of our models, such as the Moze Breeze Two and the Moze Varity, offer multiple blow-off options.
With the Breeze, you get eight different ways to purge the smoke – depending on where you position the blow-off rings.
That’s right: some hookahs can be assembled in various configurations – and depending on how you set them up, the blow-off changes. The Moze Breeze Two was actually the first hookah with this feature and introduced something truly new to the hookah world.
Fixed Look or Flexibility?
Ask yourself:
How should your blow-off look? Do you want the ability to try out different styles – or is one fixed style enough?
Note: On our category pages, you'll always find images showing exactly how the blow-off looks for each model. This makes it easy to choose a hookah that suits your aesthetic and functional preferences.
How Important Is Customizability to You?
Love changing things up? If you like to refresh the look of your setup from time to time, hookahs with lots of customization options are perfect for you.
With these models, you can easily swap out parts later – for example, replace the smoke column sleeves with others in different colors. That way, you can update your hookah’s appearance without having to buy a whole new one. Great examples of customizable models include the Moze Breeze Two and the Moze Varity. But the Amotion Valve, Amotion FUTR, and Amotion Flash Bang are also compatible with alternate sleeves.
Plug-in glass bases are especially practical here, because as we mentioned earlier, they all have the same diameter. So you can simply switch bowls for a completely new look – totally hassle-free.
How Much Does a Good Hookah Cost?
A good hookah should be made of stainless steel and match what’s important to you. If you’ve read this far, you probably already know what you value in a hookah. If the Amotion Roam checks all your boxes, then a great hookah starts at just €79.99. And even though it’s marketed as a travel hookah – the Roam is also a fantastic choice for use at home, not just on the go. If you prefer a different model that suits you better, check the comparison tables for prices and find the perfect fit.

FAQ: Hookah / Shisha Test – Which Is the Best Hookah in 2026?
Which is the best hookah in 2026?
There is no single “best” hookah – what matters is what is personally important to You. Models such as the Moze Breeze Two, the versatile Moze Varity or the compact AMOTION Roam for on the go are currently especially popular. The main differences are in size, material, blow-off system and customization options.
Which hookah is suitable for beginners?
For beginners, high-quality complete sets are recommended, where everything is already sensibly coordinated. Models such as the AMOTION FUTR or the AMOTION Roam are especially beginner-friendly because they are easy to assemble, easy to maintain and uncomplicated in everyday use.
Which material is best for a hookah?
Stainless steel is considered the highest-quality material for modern hookahs. It is rustproof, durable, flavor-neutral and especially easy to maintain. Aluminum is also commonly used, while chrome-plated materials are usually less durable.
How much does a good hookah cost?
A good stainless steel hookah starts at around €80. Premium models with elaborate blow-off systems, high-quality materials and many customization options usually range between €150 and €250 – depending on equipment and accessories.
Single-hose or multi-hose hookah – which is better?
For the best control over heat and smoking behavior, many experienced users prefer single-hose hookahs. Multi-hose systems, on the other hand, are especially practical if You regularly smoke with several people.
How useful is a blow-off system?
A blow-off system not only creates special smoke effects, but also helps remove stale or overly hot smoke from the glass base. Many modern hookahs now offer variable blow-offs with different smoke release directions.
Screw system or plug-in system – which is better?
Modern plug-in systems are very popular today because they are flexible and make it easier to switch glass bases. With suitable grommets, they are just as airtight as screw systems. Screw-on glass bases, on the other hand, offer a fixed connection and are often used on classic models.
How important are the bowl and smokebox for flavor?
The flavor of a hookah is mainly a matter of the bowl setup. Many beginners invest a lot of money in the hookah itself, but then save on the bowl or HMD. However, the bowl and smokebox have the biggest influence on flavor, heat distribution and smoke development. It is often more sensible to buy a slightly cheaper hookah and invest in a high-quality bowl and a good HMD instead.
Why do many smokers use a phunnel bowl with a smokebox?
Phunnel bowls with a smokebox or HMD are considered especially beginner-friendly today. Bowl packing is easier, the molasses stays inside the bowl better and there is no need to deal with aluminum foil. Simply place the HMD on top, add the charcoal and start smoking.
Why do many experienced users prefer smoking Dark Blend in traditional bowls?
Especially with Dark Blend tobacco, many experienced users prefer traditional bowls together with an HMD. This combination can often handle more heat and creates a particularly intense smoking behavior. Phunnel bowls with a smokebox, on the other hand, often perform especially well with Virginia tobacco.
