To get one thing straight: the claim that there is a universally best hookah is, of course, utter nonsense. As with most things in life, there is no objectively best solution for all needs.

Especially as a beginner, it is difficult to decide on a hookah (also called a waterpipe). That is exactly why we have created this little guide for you. With its help, it will be easier for you to find the best hookah for your needs!

To find out which hookah is best for your needs, you should be able to answer at least these three questions for yourself beforehand:

What You Need to Know About a Hookah

Our goal is that after this article you will know what requirements your new hookah should meet. So let's start with the basics. A hookah has only minimal influence on the flavour of the tobacco smoke. The primary factors responsible for that are the nature of the hookah tobacco, the Bowl, the HMD, the bowl setup, and the heat applied.

The primary function of a hookah is to guide the smoke produced from the bowl of the hookah into your mouth. Therefore, the smaller the hookah, the more direct the draw and the denser the smoke. When a hookah is large, you need to draw more air through it for the smoke to reach you. But if you like to draw very hard on a hookah or blow into it, with a small hookah you might accidentally pull up water or inadvertently flood the bowl.

Therefore, you should choose your hookah according to your smoking behaviour, and vice versa.

What a hookah must above all do is ensure that its base seals tightly with the Glasses. Because if it does not, you will be drawing in air from outside, which dramatically worsens the smoking experience. If the pipe is airtight (which every hookah should be), then the most important prerequisite for perfect enjoyment is already fulfilled.

There is a great variety in the draw of a hookah. By draw, we mean the airflow that passes through the pipe. Depending on how the hookah is constructed, the air flows more easily or with more resistance (correct, not a mistake). When air flows through the hookah without much resistance, this is referred to as an "open draw". This is excellent if you enjoy smoking light hookah tobacco in a phunnel bowl. If you are looking for the so-called traditional feeling, you need a hookah with slightly more resistance in the draw. These are particularly popular with classic multi-hole bowl setups.

Almost all of our pipes have a fairly open draw, so they provide a good smoking experience for both phunnel and multi-hole bowl users.

What Makes a Technically Good Hookah?

Before you decide on a model, it is worth taking a look at the technical details. These include, for example, how many hose ports the hookah has or whether it is equipped with a screw or plug-in system. In the following sections, we will take a closer look at these points so that you know exactly what matters.

How Many Hose Ports Does a Good Hookah Need?

Ultimately, it is a matter of personal taste how many hose connections you prefer on your hookah. In our opinion, a hookah works best with just one hose connection.

Why is a single-hose hookah often the better choice?

If you want to get the maximum flavour out of your hookah session, what matters most is that the tobacco in the bowl is heated evenly – and that works best when you use a hookah with only one hose connection.

Why? Simple:

• Every draw on the hose heats the air, as it passes by the hot coal. This intensifies the embers, heats the Smokebox further, and causes the tobacco to be heated more strongly.
• When several people draw in quick succession – as is the case with a multi-hose hookah – the temperature in the bowl rises quite rapidly. This can lead to a heat shock of the tobacco. The flavour of the tobacco suffers considerably as a result.
• Another argument against a multi-hose hookah is that everyone draws with different intensity, which additionally causes uneven heat distribution.
• One advantage of a hookah with only one connection is that the blow-off can be used without any restrictions, as there is no valve ball in the way. This provides better airflow, is more hygienic, and makes it easier to blow out the old smoke.

But there are also advantages to multiple connections

If you often smoke with friends, it is of course more relaxed when everyone has their own hose. No annoying passing of the hose and no long wait until you can draw again. However, you can achieve the same thing by simply using multiple single-hose hookahs instead of one hookah with several connections. Everyone can smoke their own bowl with their own favourite tobacco, completely relaxed at their own pace.

The disadvantages, however, are the greater effort involved in cleaning, higher consumption of tobacco and coal, and naturally the associated higher costs. But then again, you don't have to agree on a 'compromise tobacco'.

Push-fit or screw connection – which is better?

We are frequently asked: should a hookah have a screw or a push-fit connection?

We have thought about this topic for a long time – and to be perfectly honest: there is hardly any real advantage to the screw system.

Some say a screw connection feels more premium. That may have been true in the past – as the grommets on push-fit systems were often not the best. But that has long since changed!

Push-fit system – wobbly or actually the better choice?

A common criticism of push-fit systems in the past was that the hookah did not sit properly in the glasses. With our models, however, you don't need to worry about that. The scope of delivery always includes two glasses grommets with different diameters – one of which fits particularly firmly and ensures a stable hold. That puts the issue of wobbling to rest.

Something else you sometimes hear is: 'With screw-thread hookahs, you can carry the hookah by the smoke column.' While that may sound practical, it is not a good idea. Glasses filled with water are quite heavy. If you carry the hookah by the smoke column rather than by the glasses, a great deal of tension is placed on the connection points. This can cause the adhesive between the thread and the glasses to come loose, and the glass can fall to the ground and break.

The advantages of push-fit systems at a glance

• Uniform diameter: Push-fit glasses always have a 45 mm neck. This means you can always find a replacement if a glasses ever breaks – regardless of the manufacturer.
• More flexibility: If you own several push-fit hookahs, you can swap the glasses between them. This makes it quick and easy to add variety.
• Wide selection of bowls: In our category for push-in bowls, you'll find plenty of standard and Caesar bowls. If you're no longer happy with the design of your current bowl, simply get a new one – and your hookah will feel like new.

What role does the size of the hookah play?

A widespread myth is that small hookahs produce less smoke than large hookahs. That's complete nonsense, because the amount of smoke produced in a hookah depends solely on the hookah bowl, the heat management device, and how you pack your bowl.

A small hookah has the advantage that you can take it along to friends' places or events much more easily. It's also often easier to clean the hookah, as the individual parts are smaller and with the right hookah cleaning accessories you can reach even the tiniest corners. Especially if you only have a small sink, cleaning large hookahs can be particularly tricky.

If you enjoy smoking a hookah while watching series or films, small hookahs are also highly recommended. You can place them on the coffee table without the hookah obstructing your view. However, we also have customers who simply prefer the look of large hookahs over smaller models. Ultimately, the size of your hookah really is a matter of personal taste and you should decide primarily based on aesthetics. Besides the points mentioned above, large hookahs don't have any major disadvantages either. So if you find a large hookah more visually appealing, just keep the points above in mind and make sure they won't be an issue for you.

Which material is best for hookahs? Does it have to be stainless steel?

Hookahs are usually made from materials such as chrome-plated steel, brass, aluminium, or stainless steel. Design elements such as POM, epoxy resin, acrylic resin, wood, glass, ABS, or carbon are often added – these look stylish but have no influence on the smoke or the function of the hookah.

When it comes to the main components of the hookah, our clear recommendation is: go for stainless steel if you want your hookah to last.

Why stainless steel?

Because the other materials have a few clear disadvantages:

• Chrome-plated steel: Limescale builds up fairly quickly – especially on the threads. After a few months, some parts are barely possible to separate. You have to put a lot of time into cleaning to keep everything working.
• Brass: Tarnishes over time and becomes stained. No longer looks good and needs to be polished regularly to maintain its appearance.
• Aluminium: Quite soft. This means the threads can warp over time or bend if knocked. Not ideal if you want to enjoy your hookah for a long time.

Stainless steel has none of these problems. It's robust, easy to care for, and remains reliable even after years of use.

That's why you'll find exclusively stainless steel hookahs in our shop – because we want you to be satisfied for a long time and not constantly worry about limescale, corrosion, or damaged threads.

What accessories are included in the set?

Depending on the hookah model, certain or even all of the accessories needed to start smoking are already included. For an AMOTION FUTR, for example, you only need a bowl, HMD, and charcoal/charcoal accessories – or simply an XKAH Pro instead – and you're ready to start smoking your favourite tobacco. With other models, accessories are only partially included, meaning you only need to purchase some items additionally – provided you didn't already have a hookah or any hookah accessories at home. When buying your hookah, you should therefore always check the stated scope of delivery beforehand, so you don't make the mistake of ending up with an incomplete hookah that you can't yet use. The perfect look for your hookah – points to consider

When it comes to the appearance of your hookah, personal taste matters even more than the technical features described above. The style: should your hookah look rather understated or extravagant? Are you looking for a simple hookah, or are you more interested in an unusual model that stands out from the crowd?

If you are looking for a simple model, then the models with a uniform colour are probably the right choice for you. In our opinion, the Moze Varity in the Steel versions, as well as the Varity in the Original Black version, fall into this category. For the Moze Breeze, the colourways Original Black, Wavy Black and Wavy Frosted are relatively simple. If you are looking for a simple travel hookah, then you should take a closer look at the AMOTION Roam.

If you are looking for a very extraordinary hookah, then you should take a look at the AMOTION Flash Bang. This is modelled after a futuristic flashbang grenade. In addition, the AMOTION Valve, the AMOTION FUTR and the Candy Line colourways of the Moze Breeze Pro are more striking than simple.

Hookah Blow-Off – What should it look like for you?

The blow-off is nothing more than venting the hookah – in other words, blowing old smoke out of the base.

Why is this useful?

When nobody draws for a while, the smoke in the base loses its flavour. By briefly blowing into the hose, this old smoke is pushed out – and the next time you draw, you get fresh, aromatic smoke directly from the bowl.

A nice side effect of this process is that the blow-off looks very cool, as the smoke exits from certain parts of the hookah, creating beautiful effects.

Blow-Off Variants in Our Models

Some of our models, such as the Moze Breeze Two or the Moze Varity, even offer you different blow-off variants.

With the Breeze, you can use as many as eight different ways to blow the smoke out of your hookah – depending on where you position the blow-off rings.

You read that correctly: some hookahs can be assembled in different ways – and depending on the setup, the blow-off changes too. The Moze Breeze Two was, incidentally, the first hookah to feature this and offered the scene a true innovation.

Fixed Look or Flexible?

So think about it: what do you want your blow-off to look like? Do you want to be able to try out different variants – or is a fixed look enough for you?

How important is the customisability of the hookah to you?

Fancy something new every now and then? If you occasionally want something fresh for the eyes, then hookahs with lots of customisation options are just the thing for you. With these models, you can easily swap out individual parts afterwards, such as smoke column sleeves in different colours. This lets you give your hookah a new look time and again in a cost-effective way – without having to buy a completely new hookah. Prime examples of this type of pipe are the Moze Breeze Two and the Moze Varity. But the AMOTION Valve, the AMOTION FUTR and the AMOTION Flash Bang can also be modified with different sleeves. Particularly practical in this case are plug-in bowls, because as we explained earlier, these all have the same diameter. A good hookah should be made of stainless steel and match what is important to you. If you have read this far, you probably already know quite precisely what you value in your hookah.
