Tangiers is a unique tobacco. Firstly, the flavors are very authentic and not as sweet as many other manufacturers. Secondly, the base tobacco has a very distinct and prominent taste, which is why American tobacco is rarely smoked pure by most hookah enthusiasts.
On the contrary, in most cases, about 10-30% of Tangiers Noir tobacco is mixed with other tobacco varieties. Especially in combination with sweeter tobacco types, Tangiers can fully unleash its potential this way. Tangiers adds a bitter and spicy contrast to the overall mix. You could also say that Tangiers adds a touch of elegance to your blend.
If you want to enjoy Tangiers pure, you should know that due to its intense taste and fairly high strength, it requires a special way of packing the bowl.
Similar to a fine wine, enjoying Tangiers pure requires special treatment. You need a special bowl and a specific preparation method to get the best possible experience. The manufacturer even developed the phunnel bowl specifically for their tobacco, which has since gained great popularity in the entire hookah scene.
After that, the edges of the bowl are wiped clean, and the tobacco is pressed away from the edges with your thumb, creating a bit of space between the tobacco and the edges. You can see this technique particularly well in this video by Aljoscha:
By pressing down the tobacco, it smokes smoothly despite its strength. Another special feature of Tangiers is the heat management.
Pressed Tangiers tobacco starts with very little heat, ideally beginning with 1 ½ coals (one coal in the HMD and one tilted) and gradually increasing the heat throughout the session until you eventually feel a noticeable heat kick. This heat kick occurs because the compressed tobacco expands and presses against the HMD. When this happens, you should reduce the heat/coals back to two.
