187 tobacco comes from the well-known German rap crew 187 Strassenbande. Gzuz, Bonez, Maxwell, LX and SA4 have been active in German rap since 2007 and enjoy huge success there. Ten years after founding their crew, they got into the hookah business and have been selling their own hookah tobacco since 2017, and just like in the music game, the guys from the Strassenbande keep dropping one banger after another.

187 tobacco, often also called 187 Hamburg tobacco, stands out for its wide range and pretty wild flavour combinations. 187 offers plenty of flavours, including things like lemon and coconut, cola with lime and dragon fruit, or guava, mango and peach.

Every member of the Strassenbande now has their own creation. The cans feature artwork tied to the respective rapper, and the names and flavours of the varieties reference him too. The connection to Hamburg, the crew's hometown, runs through the whole range.

What makes 187 tobacco so special?

Most 187 flavours are based on the light, mild Virginia tobacco. It can take a lot of heat and brings little nicotine, which also makes 187 a solid beginner hookah tobacco. The new addition is the Dark line, which is built on a burley blend instead of Virginia and carries noticeably more nicotine. More on that below.

In the Strassenbande's range you'll find fruity and sweet blends of berries, citrus, stone and tropical fruits, plus a few minty-cool flavours and a couple of spicy or creamy outliers. What is 187 Strassenbande Dark?

With the Dark line, the 187 crew makes its first move towards darkblend. The base tobacco is a medium-strength burley blend that is a good deal stronger than Virginia tobacco. The burley used here is not washed, so it is fairly strong and gives the flavours a spicy tobacco note. The manufacturer states a nicotine content of 2 to 5 percent, which is the order of magnitude of raw burley tobacco, while repeatedly washed Virginia tobacco sits at around 0.05 percent. We tested both flavours in our office and to our own taste the smoking experience is comparable to AINO Dark. That puts 187 Dark in the medium strength range of our dark blend guide.

There are two flavours so far: Dark G with dark grape, and Dark 040 Hamburg with currant, raspberry and blackberry. Both come in a 150-gram tin. The line is not the place to start your very first bowl, but if you are already familiar with dark blend, you can smoke it neat without any trouble.

How do you smoke 187 tobacco best?

In our view, 187 tobacco tastes best in a setup with a phunnel and a smokebox. Since the base tobacco is Virginia, it forgives a bit more heat, but a smokebox instead of aluminium foil still pays off, as it distributes the heat more evenly.

Pack the Dark line loose and fluffy rather than pressing it down. It can take a little more heat than a Virginia flavour, but it also burns faster if you overdo it, so an HMD makes a real difference here.
