Buy AINO Dark hookah tobacco online

AINO Dark is the dark blend line from AINO and is based on burley instead of virginia. Behind the brand is Shanti, a producer from Osnabrück that took its time with the switch: almost three years passed between the first idea and the launch, and according to the manufacturer around two of those years went into the burley base tobacco alone. The line premiered at the Shisha Messe 2023 in Frankfurt.

You can taste that development time. AINO Dark combines the kick of a medium nicotine level with a soft smoking sensation. A full bowl won't knock you off your feet if you are used to milder tobacco. You will still notice the difference, though. That makes the line a good way into the dark blend category.

We stock all seven AINO Dark flavours in the 200g tin, usually with your order arriving within 1 to 2 days.

The key facts
  • Dark blend line from AINO on a burley base, produced by Shanti in Osnabrück
  • Medium nicotine level with a soft smoking sensation, a good way into dark blends
  • Almost three years of development, around two of them for the base tobacco
  • Seven flavours, all in the 200g tin
  • Designed for the phunnel with a smokebox

What sets AINO Dark tobacco apart?

The difference to the virginia line is the base tobacco. Burley absorbs more nicotine, which puts AINO Dark at a medium level, while the virginia flavours stay mild. Despite the higher strength, the tobacco still smokes smoothly.

On top of that comes what AINO does well across its milder lines: the flavours land. If a blend tastes like grapefruit, it tastes like grapefruit and not like perfume. Smoke production is strong, and the tobacco forgives a bit too much heat now and then. The tin can be resealed, so a flavour stays fresh for weeks.

AINO Dark compared to Virginia and Strong

AINO grades its range by strength. Dark sits in the middle, which makes it easy to place.

AINO VirginiaVirginiamildBeginners and anyone who prefers it lighter

If AINO Dark gets too tame for you over time, AINO Strong is the next step. In terms of strength that line is comparable to Musthave or Blackburn.

Which AINO Dark flavours are there?

For the dark line AINO developed its own flavours and also moved the two crowd favourites OHA and Black Ice over to the burley base:

  • Great Frut: grapefruit
  • OHA: Brazilian guava, ice
  • Black: intense blackberry
  • Rosy P: pomegranate, ice, rose
  • Lady Sakura: cherry
  • Conud Shake: coconut
  • Another Galaxchee: lychee

The Black is worth a quick note on the name. In the virginia line the flavour is called Black Ice, but on the burley base AINO dropped the ice because it didn't work with the new base tobacco. What's left is an intense blackberry that goes down well with our customers.

Which AINO Dark flavour is the best?

The Great Frut and the OHA move fastest with us. The Black follows right behind:

Great Frut: strong, slightly tart grapefruit and the top seller of the line

OHA: Brazilian guava with a cool ice note, unusual and fresh

Black: the blackberry from the virginia line, just stronger and without ice

The Great Frut and the OHA are also regulars in the bowls of hookah creators like Marvin from ShishaWG or Doelid. If you have already warmed to AINO's virginia blends, chances are good that you will like the dark version too. The easiest approach is to go by the fruit you enjoy.

How do I pack a bowl with AINO Dark?

AINO Dark is designed for the phunnel with a smokebox. That is what the manufacturer recommends, and we can confirm it from our own experience. Whether your HMD or smokebox is made of aluminium or stainless steel doesn't matter here.

With burley tobacco we would advise against the classic combination of a clay bowl and a chimney attachment. If you don't want a phunnel, go for a multi-hole bowl with an HMD. The nicotine will be a bit more noticeable that way.

Tip: Try the AINO Dark in a Cosmo Bowl once. Of all the multi-hole bowls we have tested, that combination gives the best results.

More dark blend brands

AINO Dark isn't the only dark blend in our online shop. If you want to work your way through the segment, take a look at Blackburn, Darkside and Musthave. If an AINO flavour does sell out, it usually doesn't take long until we get a restock.

FAQ: AINO Dark hookah tobacco

How strong is AINO Dark tobacco?

AINO Dark sits at a medium nicotine level, which places it between the mild virginia line and the strong AINO Strong. The smoking sensation stays soft nonetheless. If you are used to mild tobacco you will clearly notice the difference, but a single bowl won't overwhelm you.

Which AINO Dark flavours are there?

There are currently seven flavours, all in the 200g tin: Great Frut (grapefruit), OHA (Brazilian guava with ice), Black (blackberry), Rosy P (pomegranate, ice, rose), Lady Sakura (cherry), Conud Shake (coconut) and Another Galaxchee (lychee).

What is the difference between AINO Dark and AINO Virginia?

The base tobacco. AINO Virginia is based on virginia tobacco and is mild, AINO Dark is based on burley and sits at a medium nicotine level. Some flavours exist in both lines, but they taste stronger on the burley base.

Why is the Black in the dark line not called Black Ice?

Because the ice didn't work with the burley base tobacco. AINO left it out instead of releasing a weaker copy of the virginia flavour. What remains is an intense blackberry under the name Black.

Which bowl suits AINO Dark?

A phunnel with a smokebox works best, since that is what the tobacco is designed for. A multi-hole bowl with an HMD is a good alternative, and the nicotine will be a bit more noticeable. With burley tobacco we would advise against a clay bowl with a chimney attachment.

Can you mix AINO Dark with other flavours?

Yes. You can mix AINO Dark flavours with each other or combine them with the virginia line to soften the strength. Mixes with other dark blends work too, and the nicotine level stays correspondingly high.
