This type can be lit with a lighter – it self-ignites within 20–30 seconds. Sounds convenient, but it’s not ideal:
Made from coconut shells, this charcoal requires a heater. It offers:
Packaging of natural hookah charcoal
Perfect for home use. Costs between €20–25. Look for models with a grid or coil.

There are two main types: quick-light charcoal, which lights easily with a lighter but contains more pollutants, and natural charcoal, which burns longer, is cleaner, and provides better flavor.
It’s best to use an electric or gas-powered charcoal heater. Place the charcoal on the grid, flip after about 5 minutes, and it’s ready after another 3–5 minutes. Always ensure proper ventilation!
Natural charcoal is better in nearly all respects: it has a more neutral taste, burns longer, produces fewer pollutants, and offers a better smoking experience – but it does require a heater.
It usually consists of a heating coil and a grid. Place the charcoal on top, turn the device to the highest setting, and flip after 5 minutes. After 6–10 minutes, the charcoal will be fully lit. Only use on fireproof surfaces!
Always work on a fireproof surface, ensure good ventilation (open windows!), only handle charcoal with tongs, and use a charcoal basket for transport. Only replace gas cartridges when they are empty!
