Charcoal plays a crucial role in the flavor of a hookah. Therefore, charcoal for hookah requires special characteristics and properties that ordinary charcoal does not have.
Today, refined natural charcoal made from coconut shells is mainly used for smoking. Coconut charcoal has nearly perfect smoking properties: it is almost completely flavor-neutral, burns longer than other types of charcoal and produces very little smoke during combustion. The cubes made from coconut shells reach temperatures between 650 °C and 750 °C.
Note: When grilling, temperatures of up to around 300 degrees are usually used. Steaks that are exposed to particularly high heat come into contact with temperatures between 220°C and 300°C. However, when burning out a grill, temperatures above 400°C are sometimes reached.
The high temperatures of hookah charcoal are perfect for vaporizing the molasses in tobacco. However, these temperatures also make it necessary to think about suitable accessories. It can quickly happen that one of the glowing charcoal cubes falls down, and depending on where it lands this can range from burn holes in the carpet to a house fire. Therefore, we strongly recommend buying a charcoal tong.
In addition, a charcoal screen is also a very good investment.
If your charcoal lighter is not located directly next to your hookah, you should also consider getting a charcoal basket.
