Lighting hookah charcoal: how to do it safely and easily

- There are two types of hookah charcoal: classic hookah charcoal (also called natural charcoal) and self-lighting charcoal.
- Natural charcoal: better taste, but needs a charcoal burner.
- Self-lighting charcoal: easy to light, but worse taste and more questionable for your health.
- Both burner types (electric and gas-powered) work well.
- Safety and good ventilation are a must!
Lighting hookah charcoal sounds simple at first, but it decides whether your session tastes good or scratches. Here you will learn how to get charcoal going for your hookah, which burner suits you and what to watch out for when it comes to safety.
What kinds of hookah charcoal are there anyway?
Self-lighting charcoal: easy, but not ideal
You light this charcoal with a lighter, and within 20 to 30 seconds it glows on its own. Sounds practical, but it is not optimal:
- Contains chemicals
- Distorts the taste
- Releases more pollutants
- Produces a lot of ash
Note: The chemicals make handling easy, but they come through clearly in the taste. We do not carry self-lighting charcoal in our shop, for good reason!
Natural charcoal: the hookah standard
Hookah natural charcoal is coconut charcoal, so it is made from coconut shells. This charcoal needs a burner, but in return it offers:
- Better taste
- Fewer pollutants
- Longer burn time

Which charcoal burner suits you?
Electric charcoal burner
An electric charcoal burner is the ideal solution for home, priced between 20 and 25 euros. When buying, look for a model with a grid or spiral, because only with a grid can the charcoal be supplied with air from below!
Gas charcoal burner
More mobile and equally effective is a gas charcoal burner, which you may also know as a camping stove or gas torch. This method, however, needs a bit more caution and preparation.

Safety first! Only change the gas cartridge when it is empty, otherwise there is a risk of explosion!
Lighting natural charcoal: step by step
With an electric charcoal burner
- Place the burner on a fireproof, stable surface.
- Put the charcoal on the grid.
- Switch the burner to the highest setting.
- Turn the charcoal after 5 minutes.
- After another 3 to 5 minutes the charcoal is ready.

With a gas charcoal burner
- Insert the gas cartridge.
- Turn on the gas until you hear a hissing sound.
- Light it with a lighter or a match.
- Put the charcoal on and turn it after 5 minutes.
- After 3 to 5 minutes the charcoal is ready to use.
Important notes
Important: Only use the charcoal once it has glowed through completely. And when using it indoors, always open a window, there is a risk of carbon monoxide!

Conclusion: lighting hookah charcoal
For sessions indoors and outdoors, electric burners and gas stoves are the best choice. Still, keep an eye on your surroundings, because glowing pieces of charcoal can fall down. Faulty devices are better replaced than kept in use. Then nothing stands in the way of thick smoke.
To light charcoal, whether at home or on the road, you always need a heat source. Whether that comes from an open flame, so a campfire, a Bunsen burner or the fireplace, or from an electric heating device does not really matter. If you do not have a burner and are thinking about using your stove, check this first: ceramic hobs are out, because the stove can be damaged in the process, and on induction nothing happens at all. In theory, lighting works on an old electric stove with iron plates, but even there the heat of the charcoal can damage the plate.

FAQ: lighting hookah charcoal
What types of hookah charcoal are there?
There are two main types: self-lighting charcoal, which is easy to light with a lighter but contains chemical additives, and natural charcoal, which burns longer, is cleaner and offers a better taste.
How do you light hookah charcoal?
For natural charcoal it is best to use an electric or gas-powered charcoal burner. The charcoal is placed on the grid, turned after about 5 minutes and is ready after another 3 to 5 minutes. Always make sure there is good ventilation.
What is better: natural charcoal or self-lighting charcoal?
Natural charcoal comes out better in almost every respect. It is more neutral in taste, burns longer, develops fewer pollutants and provides a more pleasant smoking experience. For that, however, you need a suitable burner.
How does an electric charcoal burner work?
An electric charcoal burner usually consists of a heating spiral and a grid. Place the charcoal on it, set the device to the highest setting and turn the charcoal after about 5 minutes. After 6 to 10 minutes it has glowed through completely. Always use the burner only on a fireproof surface.
What safety measures should you observe when lighting?
Always work on a fireproof surface, ensure good ventilation, only handle glowing charcoal with charcoal tongs and use a charcoal basket for transport. You should only change gas cartridges when they are completely empty.
