Hookah phunnel or hookah multi-hole bowl, glazed or unglazed - what do all these terms mean in relation to the hookah bowl? If you are not yet familiar with the topic of hookah, it is not so easy to find the perfect hookah head for you. We want to help you with this guide. Even if you already have a tobacco head and smoke regularly, it can be useful to read the information to inform yourself when you are looking for a new or second head!

How do the hookah bowls differ from each other?
Probably the biggest distinction is made in the design of the hookah bowl. There are different variants, whereby the best-known and almost exclusively used hookah bowls are the phunnel and traditional bowls.
Hookah phunnel are classically smoked with a HMD (Heat Management Device, also called Smokebox) or with aluminium foil. A chimney attachment is not used here. These setups ensure that the heat is drawn through the entire tobacco in the bowl and the maximum flavour is achieved.
✔️ Did you know: A chimney top is not used with the phunnel because of the problem that most of the air is drawn directly through the middle and thus does not even touch the tobacco and no flavour is released!
Modern phunnel or traditional multi-hole bowl - Which one should I choose?
It is impossible to say which of the two designs is better or worse, as this is mainly a matter of taste. It depends, for example, on which tobacco you prefer to smoke and also on whether you prefer to smoke your tobacco strongly or gently in terms of nicotine strength. For beginners, we recommend a phunnel with a smokebox, because here the tobacco itself tastes very soft and the flavour of the aromas is very intense. This is also due to the fact that beginners usually smoke Virginia tobacco, which is optimally suited for a phunnel setup.
✔️ Note: Many shops recommend a chimney bowl set for beginners. However, we are of the opinion that the taste suffers greatly here and therefore recommend a setup with a phunnel directly for beginners!
If you are already a bit more experienced, you can also use a phunnel with aluminium foil. The bowl construction is generally similar, but the heat management is a little more difficult than with a smokebox. With many tobaccos, the flavours develop a little differently in this setup! Also for advanced smokers, we recommend trying a multi-hole bowl with HMD. This is ideal for Darkblend varieties such as Darkside or Blackburn and is also the standard setup in the country of origin of these tobacco brands. It just takes a little practice to prepare the bowl.

What material is used in the production?
In the manufacture of hookah bowls, there have been models made from many different materials. Many brands have produced models made of metal, glass, wood, silicone and clay. In the end, only the last of these materials has really prevailed, although there are also differences in clay. One difference with clay is the temperature at which the head is fired. The higher the temperature, the stronger the material in the end. This usually has a positive effect on the heat properties of the hookah bowl.

Furthermore, there are differences in the production of hookah bowls as to whether the bowl is glazed in a second firing process or is already finished after the first firing process and thus remains unglazed.
What is the difference between glazed and unglazed models?
Most hookah bowls are coated with a glaze that covers at least the tobacco deposit. This is the part of the bowl where the tobacco is placed when smoking. Many tobacco bowls also have half or all of the glaze on the outside of the tobacco bowl, but this is only for design reasons.

✔️ By the way: In the long run, almost every bowl bleeds. Even if the bowl is glazed in the tobacco depot, because small micro-cracks form in the glaze through which the molasses can penetrate the clay!
How much shisha tobacco does one bowl hold?
This varies from bowl to bowl. As a rule, heads hold 15g to 30g of hookah tobacco. This is an aspect you should consider when buying your hookah bowl, because for some people, a bowl with a large capacity is simply not worth it and it is a waste of money or tobacco to use one!
✔️ As a rule of thumb, a hookah bowl with more than 22 grams capacity is unnecessary if you smoke with a hookah with one hose connection and do not light a second set of charcoal during your hookah session. If, on the other hand, you smoke with several hose connections or people on one hookah, or make a second set of charcoal during the session, you can also consider bowls with more than 22g in order to be able to enjoy the hookah for longer!
How long can I smoke with one tobacco bowl?
How long you can smoke with one tobacco bowl depends on the amount of hookah tobacco in the head. Other factors are how many people smoke with the bowl and how often the hose is pulled. As a rule, you can smoke a bowl for between 60-120 minutes.
✔️ Misconception of many hookah smokers: A hookah with several connections is more economical because several hookahs do not have to be lit for several people. Unfortunately, this is not entirely true, as the bowl is also used up much more quickly and the taste quickly diminishes!
