Every experienced hookah smoker knows this situation: Your hookah and hookah bowl are prepared, the coal is placed on the lighter - and suddenly the fuse blows. Your coal lighter has stopped working. In this moment, the question arises: How can you light coal without using a lighter? Don't worry, there are several possible solutions to light your hookah coal without a grill! We'll present these solutions in this article. You have the following options:
If you have an old stove at home, you can light hookah coal on it. Simply place the hookah coal on the burner and turn it on. After about 5 minutes, the bottom side should glow and you can flip the coal so that after another 5 minutes all sides of the coal pieces are evenly lit.
If you want to ensure your stove isn't damaged by lighting coal, place the coal on a grate so the cubes don't touch the burner directly. You can use a baking rack for this purpose.
Always use a grate to protect your stovetop!
You can speed up the lighting process by creating a funnel from aluminum foil to place around the coal. This traps the heat and heats the coal faster.
We recommend never leaving the stove unattended while lighting coal! However, we generally advise against this method. Only use it in absolute emergencies, because if your stove gets damaged from lighting coal, you'll either get in big trouble with mom or receive a hefty bill for a new stove!
If you frequently need to light hookah coal, you should definitely invest in a proper coal lighter.
If you have a fireplace or wood stove at home, you can use it to light your hookah coal. If it's already lit, you can start immediately. If not, you'll need to chop wood and start a fire first! Once the fire is burning, simply place the coal cubes in the open flame. After 5 minutes, the hookah coal should be properly lit and ready to use.
Coal in campfire. Caution - hot!
This method works so quickly because the hookah coal is heated from all sides simultaneously. This makes the coal ready much faster than when using a traditional coal lighter.
You can obviously use the same method with an outdoor campfire. The main thing is that you have an open fire where you can place the coal cubes. Just make sure the fire continuously heats the coals and is large enough.
Do you happen to have some old quick-light hookah coals lying around? Even though it's terrible if you've smoked with them before, these coals are now worth their weight in gold! Light 3-6 quick-light coals and place the natural coal well between the lit quick-lights. The heat from the glowing quick-light coals will cause your natural coal to start glowing too.
This is how you can light your coal with quick-lights.
Maybe you still have a camping stove or hot plate from one of your last vacations in your basement or storage room? Then you should use it to light your coal.
