Making Hookah Rings: Guide to Perfect Smoke Rings!
Last updated on 11/07/2023 | Reading time approx. 02:41min

Everyone has seen them before, those cool smoke rings. But how do they actually work, and how can you learn to make them? In this article, you will discover some tips and tricks on how to make, learn, or even perfect your rings. This way, you can impress your friends at the next hookah session!
If you want to try these tips right away, it's best to prepare a hookah. Good smoke production would be a big advantage here, but it doesn't necessarily depend on the setup or tobacco you use. Both dark blend tobacco and Virginia tobacco or tobacco substitutes can be used here, as long as the tobacco isn't burnt or used up. You can also practice rings with any hookah; size doesn't matter.
The Two Most Popular Ways to Make Hookah Rings
Generally, there are two ways to make hookah rings:
- The "Cough" Technique
- The Jaw Technique
It should be noted that the cough technique is a much more efficient and easier method. However, there are some people who either master or want to learn the jaw technique right away. Cool rings can definitely be achieved both ways.
Simple Smoke Rings with the "Cough" Technique
As with rings, practice makes perfect. This technique can be practiced and improved over time once you've successfully made your first rings.
- First, make a kissy face with your mouth. It's important that your lips are pressed together and not loose, as this is the only way to maintain the shape.
- Form an "O" with your pressed lips. It's important to check the shape in the mirror or with your smartphone's front camera. The bigger the "O" you can make, the bigger the rings you can shoot later.
- Now practice coughing, which is essential for this technique. First, cough normally, and then cough lighter and weaker until you have a minimal cough that is almost inaudible. The stronger you cough, the faster the ring will fly, allowing you to control the speed of the ring. However, for the first exercises, a light cough is enough, as it makes it easier to practice.
- Place your tongue on the floor of your mouth, where it should stay while you shoot the rings.
- Now take a puff from your hookah and combine all the steps. Form the "O" with your pressed lips and cough lightly. The faster you cough in succession, the more rings you can shoot.
- Now you can steadily improve and practice your technique. Try different "O" shapes with your mouth and experiment with coughing stronger or weaker. This way, you'll quickly figure out how to blow the best rings.
The Jaw Technique - How the Pros Do It!
This technique is a bit harder than the "cough" technique and also less efficient, but you can still make some really cool rings this way.
- First, form an "O" with your mouth. Here, the lips are not pressed together but left in their normal state.
- Now, move your jaw upward with a "snapping" motion. You can push your jaw forward a bit and try it that way. This usually requires a lot of practice.
- You can simply leave your tongue on the floor of your mouth. Once you're more advanced, you can use your tongue or a light cough to make the rings fly further. This means you can combine the "cough" technique with the jaw technique.
