Aino tobacco is a fairly new brand that launched at the end of 2021. However, the manufacturer is anything but unknown. Behind the hookah tobacco from Aino Tobacco is Shanti, a wholesaler from Osnabrück that previously produced several different pipe tobacco brands. So there’s a lot of know-how behind this newcomer!
AINO tobacco is produced in Germany, more precisely in Osnabrück. Production takes place under strict quality controls, using modern filtering and testing methods, among other things, to ensure that only the best tobacco leaves are used. AINO also places great importance on sustainability and sources its tobacco from responsibly managed growing regions. The brand combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies to ensure a consistent, high-quality product.
This expertise is probably also the reason why AINO is already considered one of the top brands for hookah tobacco today. AINO’s range includes a wide selection of flavors and different pack sizes. Particularly popular are the 0.2 kilogram cans, which are ideal for everyday use. Thanks to clear organization and differentiation of strength levels within the range, it’s easy to quickly find the right products for you. In the scene, some flavors have quickly become new favorites and are so popular that they end up in some hookah smokers’ bowls every day. Bestsellers include, among others: Black Ice and OHA.
According to the manufacturer, Aino hookah tobacco is unique, and we think there’s something to it! On the one hand, the manufacturer impresses with high quality, and on the other hand, the different flavors deliver intense and extraordinary taste experiences. Beyond flavor, this Osnabrück tobacco also stands out thanks to excellent smoke production and strong heat resistance.
At the 2023 hookah trade fair in Frankfurt, Aino Dark Blend tobacco was presented for the first time under the brand—based on a stronger Burley tobacco. Previously, the brand offered exclusively Virginia tobacco blends. At the first Moze Summerfest, AINO then introduced its new line AINO STRONG with the actual sales launch starting at the end of September 2024. With the AINO STRONG range, the Osnabrück producer reworked its Dark line and expanded the portfolio with a very strong version of AINO’s Burley tobacco flavors.

AINO’s range is constantly growing and includes three product lines that are being expanded step by step, each with its own distinct flavor profiles. The most popular flavors are also sometimes adapted to another tobacco base, so you can enjoy them both as single-variety mixes and as blends made from Virginia and Dark Blends. The portfolio has developed impressively over the past few years, so there should be something for every taste.
Whereas in the past there was only hookah tobacco from the brand’s Virginia line, today almost only about half of all flavors are still based on Virginia.
Aino tobacco is available in different pack sizes, including cans with 0.2 kilograms (200g) as well as larger units with 1 kilogram.
Pricing is particularly transparent: for example, the price is 139.50 for 1 kilogram, which is quite an attractive price-performance ratio compared to the overall range.

Aino doesn’t do things halfway. Part of the Osnabrück producer’s philosophy is to put a lot of care into developing a product before it goes public. That’s why it doesn’t surprise us that adapting the popular Virginia blends to Dark Blend took almost three years before it was first presented to consumers. According to the manufacturer, nearly two years were spent on developing the Burley base tobacco alone—and you can definitely taste it! Before the AINO Dark line was released, there was hardly any Dark Blend available in Germany besides Russian manufacturers such as Darkside Tobacco or Blackburn. That made it all the more important for AINO to bring a worthy representative of this genre to market. AINO’s aromatic Dark Blend combines the kick of a medium nicotine level with a pleasantly smooth smoking feel. This means that even if you’re used to milder tobacco, a bowl of Aino Dark Tobacco won’t completely knock you off your feet—but you will clearly feel the higher nicotine level. In our opinion, it’s an ideal dark hookah tobacco for getting into the world of Dark Blends!
Within the Dark Blend line, AINO has released a whole bunch of new flavors that are perfectly matched to the new Burley blend. The two most popular flavors—OHA and Black Ice—have also been adapted to a Dark Blend base. Aino’s selection of Burley tobacco flavors includes the following tastes:
Because it was important to the manufacturer to authentically adapt the two flavor notes of the original Virginia blend to the new, stronger tobacco base, they also had to undergo critical testing. Under no circumstances did they want to disappoint the fanbase’s expectations with a lazy copy of the original.
The new Burley base made it necessary, for example, to remove the ice from the Black Ice blend, as it didn’t harmonize well in the Dark Blend variant. The Dark version of Black Ice is therefore “only” an intense, authentic blackberry called Aino Black, which tastes excellent and is also very well received by our customers.
In response to repeated requests from the community, AINO set out to develop an even stronger Dark Blend product line called AINO STRONG. As we’ve come to expect from the manufacturer, this new Burley blend was refined until it harmonized perfectly with the brand’s aromas and smoked pleasantly smooth. The result is a tobacco that performs very well both in a traditional bowl and in a phunnel, delivers a nice, intense flavor experience, and is comparable in strength to MustH or Blackburn tobacco. Overall, the new AINO STRONG offers a thoroughly successful flavor experience that should be a "Great Match" for advanced smokers and long-time Dark Blend enthusiasts.
Most of our customers like Aino Black Ice or Aino Oha best among the Virginia flavors—and we agree! That’s probably also the reason why AINO directly transposes these flavors to all new tobacco bases. AINO Black Ice is an intense blackberry tobacco with a cool note. This blend is also very popular with major hookah content creators such as Marvin from ShishaWG or Doelid! In our view, Aino Oha tastes like Brazilian guava and is a very unusual flavor. Especially if you’ve been smoking for a long time and want some variety from your favorite flavors, OHA by Aino is an excellent choice! But we can also recommend all other Virginia flavors from the brand. If you like the fruit or the flavor described for the tobacco, the likelihood that you’ll also enjoy the matching tobacco is extremely high with Aino—because the flavors are captured exceptionally well! Another great tobacco is AINO Massai which strongly resembles African Queen by Os Tobacco, but has its own twist.
Most of our customers love Aino Dark Great Frut and Aino Dark Oha. Great Frut is an intense, bold grapefruit tobacco, and Dark Oha combines the intensely fruity taste of Brazilian guava with the cooling freshness of ice. Aino tobacco is designed for a phunnel with a smokebox. According to the manufacturer, you get the best results for the tobacco with this setup. We can confirm this from our own experience as well.

For the brand’s Virginia tobacco, however, the rule is that you can also smoke it in a classic setup using a traditional clay bowl with a chimney attachment. Here, only the flavor and smoke production are a bit less intense.
For Burley tobacco, on the other hand, we advise against combining a clay bowl with a chimney attachment. If you want to use a setup other than a phunnel with a smokebox here, you can go for a traditional bowl with an HMD. In this setup, the tobacco’s nicotine is more noticeable and the tobacco is therefore a bit stronger. Whether the HMD or the smokebox is made of aluminum or stainless steel doesn’t matter.
Our tip for AINO Dark: Try the tobacco in one of the Cosmo Bowl bowls. With these, we’ve achieved the best results for traditional bowls!
