AINO tobacco is a fairly new brand that entered the market at the end of 2021. However, the producer is anything but unknown. Behind the hookah tobacco from AINO Tobacco is Shanti, a wholesaler from Osnabrück who has already produced various tobacco brands in the past. So there is plenty of expertise behind this newcomer! This know-how is probably also the reason why AINO is already one of the top brands for hookah tobacco today. Within the scene, some of the flavours quickly became new favourites for many hookah smokers. Among the top sellers are blends such as Black Ice and OHA.
According to the manufacturer, AINO hookah tobacco is unique – and we think there’s definitely something to that! On the one hand, the producer convinces with high quality, and on the other, the different flavours offer intense and unusual taste experiences. In addition to its flavour, this Osnabrück-based tobacco also scores with excellent smoke production and heat resistance.
At the 2023 Hookah Fair in Frankfurt, AINO Dark Blend tobacco was presented for the first time under the brand, based on a stronger Burley tobacco. Previously, the blends were exclusively based on Virginia tobacco. At the end of September 2024, the producer from Osnabrück also launched AINO STRONG, a revised and very strong version of the AINO Burley blends.
By now there are a full 27 flavours from the AINO brand. The portfolio has grown strongly over the past few years, so there should be something for every taste. Of the 21 flavours, 18 belong to the Virginia line and 9 to the Dark line.

AINO doesn’t do things halfway. Part of the Osnabrück producer’s philosophy is to invest a lot of care in developing a product before it is released to the public. So it’s no surprise that adapting the popular Virginia blends to a Dark Blend took almost three years before they were presented to consumers for the first time. According to the manufacturer, almost two years went into developing the Burley base tobacco alone – and you can definitely taste that! Before the AINO Dark line appeared, there were almost only Dark Blend tobaccos from Russian producers available in Germany, such as Darkside Tobacco or Blackburn. It was therefore especially important to AINO to bring a worthy representative of this genre to the market. AINO’s aromatic Dark Blend combines the kick of a medium nicotine level with a pleasantly smooth smoke feel. This means that even if you are usually used to milder tobacco, a bowl of AINO Dark Tobacco won’t completely knock you off your feet – but you will definitely notice the higher nicotine level. In our opinion, it’s an ideal dark hookah tobacco to dive into the world of Dark Blends!
Within the Dark Blend line, AINO has released a whole range of new flavours that are perfectly matched to the new Burley blend. In addition, the two most popular flavours, OHA and Black Ice, have also been adapted to a Dark Blend base. AINO’s selection of Burley-based flavours includes the following profiles:
Because it was important to the manufacturer to adapt the two flavour profiles of the original Virginia blends authentically to the new, stronger tobacco base, they also had to undergo critical testing. At no point did they want to disappoint the fanbase with a half-hearted copy of the originals.
The new Burley base made it necessary, for example, to remove the ice component from the Black Ice blend, as it didn’t harmonise well in the Dark Blend version. The Dark version of Black Ice is therefore now “only” an intense and authentic blackberry called AINO Black – but it tastes fantastic and is also very well received by our customers.
Following many requests from the community, AINO began developing an even stronger Dark Blend product line under the name AINO STRONG. As we’ve come to expect from the brand, this new Burley blend was refined until it worked perfectly with AINO’s flavour profiles and remained pleasantly smooth to smoke. The result is a tobacco that performs very well both in a traditional bowl and in a phunnel bowl, delivers a rich, intense flavour experience and, in terms of strength, is comparable to tobacco from Must H or Blackburn. Overall, the new AINO STRONG offers a thoroughly convincing flavour experience that should be a “great match” for advanced smokers and long-time Dark Blend enthusiasts.
Most of our customers consider AINO Black Ice or AINO Oha to be the best among the Virginia flavours – and we fully agree! That’s likely also the reason why AINO has carried these profiles directly across to all new tobacco lines. AINO Black Ice is an intense blackberry tobacco with a cooling note. This blend is also very popular among major hookah content creators such as Marvin from ShishaWG or Doelid! AINO Oha tastes of Brazilian guava and, in our opinion, is a very unusual flavour. Especially if you’ve been smoking for a long time and are looking for something different from your regular favourites, OHA from AINO is an excellent choice! But we can also wholeheartedly recommend all other Virginia flavours from the brand. If you like the fruit or flavour listed on the label, the chances are extremely high that you’ll also enjoy the corresponding tobacco from AINO – their flavour profiles are incredibly on point! Another great tobacco is AINO Massai, which strongly reminds us of African Queen from OS Tobacco, but with its own twist.
Most of our customers love AINO Dark Great Frut and AINO Dark Oha. Great Frut is an intense and powerful grapefruit tobacco, and Dark Oha combines the intensely fruity flavour of Brazilian guava with the cooling freshness of ice. These blends are also very popular with major hookah content creators such as Marvin from ShishaWG or Doelid! AINO Dark Black is, in our view, a very distinctive flavour. Especially if you’ve been smoking for a long time and want a change from your usual favourites, Dark OHA from AINO is an excellent choice!
That said, we can recommend all of the brand’s flavours. If you’re already familiar with AINO’s Virginia blends, the chances are very high that you’ll also enjoy AINO’s Dark tobacco.
AINO tobacco is designed to be used in a phunnel bowl with a Smokebox HMD. According to the manufacturer, this setup delivers the best results for this tobacco – and we can confirm that based on our own experience.
For the brand’s Virginia tobacco, you can also use a classic setup with a clay bowl and chimney attachment. In this case, flavour intensity and smoke production are simply a little lower.
For Burley-based tobacco, however, we advise against using a clay bowl with chimney attachment. If you want to use a different setup than a phunnel bowl with Smokebox, you can opt for a traditional bowl with an HMD. In this setup, the nicotine in the tobacco is more noticeable and the blend feels a bit stronger. It doesn’t matter whether the HMD or Smokebox is made of aluminium or stainless steel.

There are currently 21 AINO flavours. Of these, 15 are based on Virginia tobacco and 6 are based on Burley tobacco. According to the manufacturer, new flavours are constantly being developed!
In our opinion: YES! We’ve tested the tobacco extensively ourselves and are very impressed with AINO hookah tobacco.
AINO is produced in Germany – more precisely in Osnabrück! In this production facility, strict attention is paid to hygiene and cleanliness, and only high-quality ingredients are used.
We unfortunately can’t say exactly when new flavours will be released. However, the manufacturer always announces new products in good time via their official AINO Instagram profile!
