Do you love enjoying a hookah session but would prefer to avoid harmful and addictive substances? Then you should definitely try the tobacco substitute from Smoke Island. Smoke Island is based on cellulose, but it smokes very similarly to real hookah tobacco. And the best part: the cellulose doesn’t even smoulder. Only the molasses is vaporised. This means no harmful combustion by-products can form – and that clearly shows in the taste.
Smoke Island is a tobacco substitute made from cellulose. Sounds odd, but that’s how it is. Cellulose is boiled-out plant fibre that can, for example, also be used for paper production. Depending on the plant it comes from, these fibres are longer or shorter and have slightly different properties.
What all cellulose has in common: once dried, it is extremely absorbent and soaks up liquids very well. You know this from different types of paper, such as kitchen roll, tissues, but also newspapers and printer paper. Since tobacco leaves also consist largely of cellulose, they are likewise capable of absorbing and releasing liquids – and that’s why dried tobacco leaves can be soaked in molasses so effectively.
When you heat cellulose, it releases the absorbed liquid again, which is why cellulose is ideal as a carrier material for molasses or for flavourings, glycerine and liquid sweeteners. When heat is applied, cellulose releases the liquid slowly. Essentially, there is no difference in how cellulose and tobacco work. Cellulose can bind more liquid and, because the fine fibres become more mushy than fluffy in combination with liquid, you can’t pack it quite as fluffy as tobacco. Cellulose has virtually no flavour of its own, so the aromas come through more clearly and the “smoke production” is, thanks to the higher absorbency of the cellulose, somewhat more intense than with regular tobacco.
In addition, many harmful substances that are found in tobacco simply do not exist in cellulose. Therefore, as far as is currently known, smoking cellulose is less harmful than consuming tobacco products.
If you ignore the flavour of the burning coals and the associated carbon monoxide, using cellulose is almost comparable to vaping, and the smoke production is likely to be noticeably more intense than with standard tobacco due to the characteristics of the cellulose.
Smoke Island gives you a solid foundation of different flavour profiles. In our shop you’ll find, for example:
But the manufacturer actually offers an even larger selection of flavours.
According to our sales figures, Ice Lemon (a nicely sweet lemon with a light cooling), Ice Grape (grape and mint) and Ice Gum (chewing gum & mint) are particularly popular with our customers.
Packing the bowl is not much different from any other bowl build. The only thing you really need to watch is the heat, because Smoke Island’s tobacco substitute does not tolerate as much heat as regular tobacco. With a bit of distance to the coals and an ONMO HMD (especially the black ONMO), this shouldn’t be a problem at all. As soon as it starts to feel harsh, simply reduce the heat.
No. Since Smoke Island is not tobacco and only contains cellulose, flavourings and glycerine, there is no nicotine in the product.
Yes, the smoke is very dense, and you can control it via the heat supply. Less heat means less smoke.
Smoke Island does not contain tobacco, so the earthy, spicy tobacco notes are missing. If you enjoy the taste of tobacco, you will miss it. If that’s not really your thing anyway, Smoke Island might even taste better to you than regular tobacco.
Smoke Island does not contain nicotine, which is the substance responsible for addiction. So the answer is no.
Use whatever setup you already have. Just make sure that the bowl doesn’t get too much heat so that the cellulose doesn’t burn.
