Especially in summer, many hookah smokers want to enjoy the cool smoke of their water pipe outdoors! But lighting hookah coal outside can be challenging. In this article, we'll show you how to light your hookah coal outdoors so you can enjoy your hookah on the go. When you're outside, you basically have the following options to get your hookah coal glowing:
If you're willing to compromise on hookah taste when outdoors, you can use quick-light coal. This can be easily lit with a lighter since it contains chemical additives that make the coal glow on its own once one corner is ignited.
However, we don't recommend this option because the hookah doesn't taste great with this type of coal, and it's even more harmful to your health than regular hookah smoking. This is due to the chemical additives in the coal.
As mentioned earlier, you basically have 3 options for lighting coal outdoors. We're assuming you don't have access to electricity at your location. If you do have electricity, you have many more options to get your coal glowing, which we've described in our guide on lighting hookah coal.
The easiest solution is to light hookah coal using a gas coal lighter. For this, you only need the lighter, a gas cartridge, and matches or a lighter.
If you already have these items, you can easily light coal outdoors. Here's how:
1. Insert the gas cartridge into the designated compartment in the lighter and screw it tight.
2. Light a match or lighter and turn the lighter's knob to release gas. You should hear a quiet hissing sound. Use your match or lighter flame to ignite the lighter's flame.

Now you can place the coal on the lighter. As with an electric lighter, you should turn the hookah coal after about 5 minutes so all sides heat evenly. After turning, wait another 3 to 5 minutes until the hookah coal glows evenly on all sides.

Do you still have quick-light coal from the old days at home? You can use it to light your natural hookah coal! Simply take 3-6 quick-light coals and ignite them. When the quick-light coals start glowing, place your coal cubes on them, and the coal should slowly start to glow.

If you use 3 quick-light coals to ignite 3 natural coal cubes, you'll need to turn them when they're half done. Alternatively, you can use 6 quick-light coals and place them simultaneously above and below the natural coals. This method is faster and saves you from turning the coal pieces.
Another alternative that works similarly to quick-light coals is bio grill lighters or a disposable grill. With bio grill lighters, you just need to find a way to properly position the coal on them. The easiest way is probably using a container like a hookah coal carrier. Place the lighters inside, ignite them, and then place the natural coal on top.
With a disposable grill, the charcoal serves as the lighter, and you already have a tray containing it. When the charcoal glows, simply place your hookah coal in the embers, and within minutes it should be fully glowing.

If you're sitting around a cozy campfire with friends in the evening, you can also light your coal perfectly in the fire's embers. Simply place the natural coal cubes in the embers and wait until they glow completely.

If you choose this method, you should use the longest possible coal tongs, as it can be difficult to position the coal properly in the embers without burning your fingers! Good tongs for this would be coal tweezers. You can find all coal tongs here:
