Darkside bowls: built for their own dark blend
Darkside is one of the best known producers of dark blend hookah tobacco in Russia, and in Germany the brand is among the most popular there is. At some point the obvious next step was to develop their own hookah bowls, ones the house tobacco runs in as well as possible.
Five models have come out of that so far. Four of them are traditional bowls, plus one phunnel. All are made by hand in Russia and cost €29.99.
- Five models: Shot, Micro, Classic and Killer as traditional bowls, plus the phunnel
- Depots from 10 g on the Shot up to 20 g on Classic and Killer
- Handmade in Russia, impact-resistant material
- Silicone sleeve on the shaft, so the bowl stays handleable
- Built for HMD use, heat-up time around 3 to 4 minutes
Which models are there?
The models differ mainly in the depot, and with it in session length. The figures come from the manufacturer data.
| Model | Shape | Depot | Smoking time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shot | Traditional bowl | 10 to 12 g | 30 to 45 minutes |
| Phunnel | Phunnel | 14 to 18 g | approx. 60 minutes |
| Micro | Traditional bowl | approx. 16 g | 45 to 60 minutes |
| Classic | Traditional bowl | 18 to 20 g | approx. 60 minutes |
| Killer | Traditional bowl | 18 to 20 g | approx. 60 minutes |
Shot and Micro: the economical ones
At 10 to 12 g the Shot is the smallest bowl in the range and one of the most economical anywhere. With 25 g tins that gets you two sessions per tin. The Micro is the development of it: a slightly bigger depot, plus a silicone sleeve with a few extra details.
Classic and Killer: the big traditional bowls
Both hold 18 to 20 g and run for about an hour. The difference is in the depot: the Classic has a glazed and slightly narrower depot, the Killer an unglazed one.
The phunnel
The only model in the range that is not a traditional bowl. A 14 to 18 g depot, and because the molasses stays in the depot it is the easier choice if dark blend is not all you smoke.
What sets Darkside bowls apart
The first thing you notice is the design. The modern, clean lines are a perfect match for the Darkside hookahs, and if you pair a Darkside bowl with a Darkside hookah, the whole setup looks of a piece.
They are made from a particularly robust material. It takes a fair bit and makes the bowls impact resistant, usually surviving a drop from a low height. It conducts heat well, so the tobacco gets evenly hot without burning.
The black silicone sleeve on the shaft is the second distinctive part. It lets you handle the bowl even at high temperatures, which helps when taking it off after the session.
Tip: the bowls only need about 3 to 4 minutes to come up to temperature. Take a few pulls during that time and you will notice sooner whether the heat is right.
Which tobacco suits them?
The obvious one is their own Darkside tobacco, which the bowls were developed for. The traditional bowls generally play to their strengths with strong dark blend tobacco. Virginia works too, and is more pleasant in the phunnel.
Which attachment fits?
All five models are built for HMD use and have a standardised fit, so any common smokebox works. Darkside builds their own, and the models from ONMO, AO or Na Grani work just as well. As an alternative you stretch aluminium foil over the bowl.

FAQ: Darkside hookah bowls
Which Darkside bowls are there?
Five: Shot, Micro, Classic and Killer as traditional bowls, plus the Darkside phunnel. All are made by hand in Russia.
How much tobacco fits in a Darkside bowl?
Between 10 and 20 g depending on the model. The Shot holds 10 to 12 g, the Micro around 16 g, the phunnel 14 to 18 g, and Classic and Killer 18 to 20 g each.
Which tobacco are the bowls meant for?
Mainly strong dark blend, which is what they were developed for. Virginia works as well, and is more pleasant in the phunnel than in the traditional bowls.
How sturdy are the bowls?
The material is impact-resistant and usually survives a small drop. A clay bowl is still not unbreakable, so treat it with normal care.
What is the silicone sleeve for?
It sits on the shaft and stays cool enough for you to handle the bowl while it is hot. That makes taking it off after the session easier.
Do I need an HMD?
The bowls are built for one, and a smokebox gets the most out of them. Aluminium foil works just as well though.
