Quasar: bowl and heat management in one
The bowls from French maker Quasar are not cheap. What you get in return is something no clay bowl can do: a hookah bowl made from heat-resistant borosilicate glass that brings a smokebox and a self-regulating heat and airflow system along with it.
In practice that means you fill the glass body with hookah tobacco, put the charcoal into the built-in HMD and set the lid on top. After about ten minutes the bowl is up to temperature and stays there, without you adjusting anything. At the Shisha Messe 2024 Quasar was awarded best accessory for it.

How the heat management works
The heating system is double-walled and insulated on the outside. That keeps the heat in the core, and the charcoal burns down more evenly. A balanced circuit of heat and fresh air also gives an even draw.
For you that removes the work you normally have with an HMD: no shifting the charcoal around, no lid on and off, no topping up mid-session. On the Petit Raas 2 with only one piece of charcoal, the maker recommends swapping it about every 30 minutes.
Tip: if you want the bowl up to temperature faster, put the HMD insert on the charcoal burner while you light up. Then it starts out preheated.

Raas 2
The base model and the bowl Quasar became known for. A borosilicate glass depot holding 15 to 25 g, two pieces of charcoal in the built-in HMD, and a flexible connection. That makes it fit practically any hookah.
Petit Raas 2
The compact version for sessions with a single piece of charcoal. The heating system shrinks from 99 to 80 mm in diameter, and the glass bowl holds 12.5 to 15 g. Built from anodised aluminium, borosilicate glass and silicone. Thanks to the silicone shaft it fits all kinds of hookahs, according to the maker.
Raas 2 Black Hole
The developed version with a nano-ceramic coating. That is more resilient and non-stick, which makes the bowl easier to clean day to day. A depot of 18 to 25 g depending on how you pack it, and according to Quasar sessions of up to two hours.
Who is it worth it for?
If heat management is the part of smoking that annoys you, Quasar is the answer to it. You pay as much for one bowl as for two or three good clay bowls plus an HMD, and in exchange you save yourself the handling during the session.
If instead you want different bowls for different blends, or you enjoy tinkering with your setup, stay with clay. A phunnel for €15 and an aluminium HMD will get you a long way too.
