Aino Tobacco is a relatively new brand that entered the market at the end of 2021. However, the manufacturer is anything but an unknown name. Behind hookah tobacco from Aino Tobacco is Shanti, a wholesaler from Osnabrück, who has previously produced various tobacco brands. This means a wealth of expertise is behind this newcomer! This expertise is likely the reason why AINO is already considered one of the top brands for hookah tobacco. Some of its flavors have quickly become favorites among many hookah smokers. Bestsellers include Black Ice and OHA.
According to the manufacturer, Aino's hookah tobacco is unique, and we think there’s something to that! On one hand, the manufacturer impresses with high quality, and on the other, the different flavors offer intense and extraordinary taste experiences. In addition to its flavors, this Osnabrück-based tobacco also stands out with its excellent smoke production and heat resistance. At the 2023 Hookah Fair in Frankfurt, Aino introduced its first Dark Blend tobacco, based on a stronger Burley tobacco. Previously, the brand only offered Virginia tobacco blends. In late September 2024, the Osnabrück-based producer also launched AINO STRONG, an improved and much stronger version of AINO’s Burley tobacco varieties.
By now, there are a total of 27 flavors from the AINO brand. The portfolio has grown significantly over the years, ensuring there is something for every taste. Of the 27 flavors, 18 belong to the Virginia series and 9 to the Dark series.

Aino doesn’t do things halfway. The philosophy of the Osnabrück-based producer is to put great care into the development of a product before it is released to the public. That’s why we weren’t surprised that it took almost three years for the adaptation of the popular Virginia blends to Dark Blend before they were introduced to consumers. According to the manufacturer, nearly two years were spent developing the Burley base tobacco alone, and you can definitely taste the difference! Before the launch of the AINO Dark line, most Dark Blends available in Germany came from Russian manufacturers, such as Darkside Tobacco or Blackburn. Therefore, it was especially important for AINO to bring a worthy representative of this category to the market. AINO’s aromatic Dark Blend combines the kick of a medium nicotine level with a pleasantly smooth smoking experience. This means that even if you’re used to milder tobacco, a bowl of Aino Dark Tobacco won’t completely overwhelm you—but you will definitely notice the higher nicotine level. In our opinion, this makes it an ideal dark hookah tobacco to dive into the world of Dark Blends!
Under the Dark Blend series, AINO has introduced a whole range of new flavors, perfectly tailored to the new Burley blend. However, the two most popular flavors, OHA and Black Ice, have also been adapted into a Dark Blend version. Aino’s selection of Burley tobacco flavors includes the following:
Since the manufacturer aimed to authentically adapt the flavors of the original Virginia blend to the new, stronger tobacco base, these adaptations were rigorously tested. They wanted to avoid disappointing their fanbase with a careless copy of the original.
The new Burley base required some modifications, such as removing the ice from the Black Ice blend, as it did not harmonize well in the Dark Blend version. The dark version of Black Ice is now simply an intense and authentic blackberry flavor called Aino Black, which tastes excellent and has been very well received by our customers.
Due to high demand from the community, AINO developed an even stronger Dark Blend product line called AINO STRONG. As expected from the manufacturer, this new Burley blend was continuously refined until it perfectly complemented the brand's flavors and provided a smooth smoking experience. The result is a tobacco that performs well in both multi-hole bowls and phunnels, offering a rich and intense flavor experience comparable in strength to MustH or Blackburn tobacco. Overall, the new AINO STRONG provides a well-rounded flavor experience, making it a "Great Match" for experienced and long-time Dark Blend enthusiasts.
Most of our customers consider Aino Black Ice or Aino Oha to be the best Virginia flavors, and we completely agree! This is likely the reason why AINO adapted these flavors across all its new tobacco lines. Black Ice is an intense blackberry tobacco with a cooling note. This blend is also a favorite among major hookah content creators like Marvin from ShishaWG and Doelid! Aino Oha tobacco features the flavor of Brazilian guava, which we think is quite unique. If you've been smoking for a long time and are looking for a change from your usual favorites, OHA from Aino is an excellent choice! However, all Virginia flavors from the brand are worth trying. If you like the fruit or flavor mentioned in the name, there’s a high chance you’ll enjoy the matching Aino tobacco as well, as the flavors are extremely well-crafted!
Most of our customers love Aino Dark Great Frut and Aino Dark Oha. Great Frut is an intense and bold grapefruit tobacco, while Dark Oha combines the rich, fruity taste of Brazilian guava with the cooling freshness of ice. These blends are also favorites among major hookah content creators like Marvin from ShishaWG and Doelid! Aino Dark Black Oha is, in our opinion, a truly unique flavor. If you've been smoking for a long time and are looking for something different, Dark OHA from Aino is an excellent choice! That being said, all other flavors from the brand are worth trying. If you're already familiar with Aino’s Virginia blends, the chances are very high that you'll enjoy Aino’s Dark Tobacco as well.
Aino tobacco is designed for use in a phunnel with a smokebox. According to the manufacturer, this setup delivers the best results for their tobacco, and we can confirm this from our own experience.
However, the brand’s Virginia tobacco can also be smoked using a traditional setup with a clay bowl and chimney top. In this case, the flavor and smoke production will be slightly less intense.
For Burley tobacco, however, we do not recommend using a clay bowl with a chimney top. If you prefer an alternative to a phunnel with a smokebox, you can opt for a multi-hole bowl with an HMD. In this setup, the nicotine effect of the tobacco is more pronounced, making the smoke feel stronger. Whether the HMD or smokebox is made of aluminum or stainless steel does not matter.

Currently, there are 21 flavors of AINO. Of these, 15 are based on Virginia tobacco, and 6 are based on Burley tobacco. According to the manufacturer, new flavors are continuously in development!

AINO is produced in Germany, specifically in Osnabrück! The production facility strictly adheres to hygiene and cleanliness standards, using only the highest quality ingredients.
Unfortunately, we can’t say exactly when new flavors will be released. However, the manufacturer always announces new flavors in advance on their AINO Instagram profile!
