Best travel hookah 2026: the big comparison for on the go

- A good travel hookah is small, glass-free and carries its centre of gravity low.
- Small does not mean less smoke. That comes down to the bowl and the smokebox, not the size of the hookah.
- Our favourite is the AMOTION Roam: 15.8 cm, 1169 g, no glass at all, from 79.99 euros.
- Also in the comparison: Hoob subAtom, Aladin 2Go and El-Badia P1.
- For festivals, the beach and camping, being glass-free is the single most important criterion.
- With the XKAH Pro you smoke on the go entirely without charcoal.
Why have a separate hookah for travelling?
Picture this: it is summer, your friends want to meet up in the park for a bit of a chill, and someone asks whether you feel like bringing your hookah along. You think, great idea, but hauling everything there is heavy and annoying, and on top of that you have your doubts about the base surviving the trip. That is exactly what travel hookahs are for: compact devices that survive being carried in a backpack and still work like a normal hookah.
The market for them is fairly small, though. All the more reason to know what matters. And that is what this guide is about.
How to spot a good travel hookah
Five points decide whether your travel hookah is fun on the go or stays in the cupboard.
1. No glass
It sounds unimportant at first, but it is one of the most important criteria, and there is a very practical reason for it. If your travel hookah has glass in it, you cannot use it everywhere. Glass is banned on almost every festival site, and you do not want broken shards on the beach either. A travel hookah without glass can come along, one with a glass base cannot. It really is that simple.
Make sure there is genuinely no glass in it. Acrylic and plastic are fine, actual glass is not.
2. A low centre of gravity
Outdoors, your hookah rarely stands on a level table. If someone then pulls on the hose, it must not tip over. Two design details help: weight low down in the device, and a hose connector that sits at the bottom rather than at the top.
If the connector sits high up, the chance that a tug on the hose topples the hookah is higher. If the hose sits further down, there is less leverage and the hookah usually stays put.
3. Height and packed size
Anything under roughly 25 cm fits into a normal backpack. Often more interesting than the height itself is the widest point, because that decides whether the device fits into a side pocket or a cup holder, for example.
4. Material: stainless steel, aluminium or plastic
With aluminium you should look closely. Anodised aluminium wears off over time where the charcoal sits, whereas stainless steel looks like it did on day one again after a clean. What you save at purchase you may well pay for in durability.
Plastic is no drawback on a travel hookah, quite the opposite. It saves weight where weight does not help, and it does not break when the device falls over. What matters is that the parts exposed to heat are metal, ideally stainless steel.
5. What is included and the bag
The most annoying thing to carry is usually not the hookah but the accessories. Bowl, HMD, tongs, charcoal, tobacco, hose and mouthpiece all want to come along. A matching bag that takes the complete setup is therefore extremely practical.
Does a small hookah produce less smoke?
That is a misconception we hear and read fairly often, and it is simply not correct.
How much smoke and how much flavour come through depends on your bowl and smokebox, that is, on how the tobacco is heated. With a sensible setup you have nothing to worry about on a small hookah.
Another important point is volume. Thanks to the shorter stem and the small volume in the base, the draw is more direct and you pull considerably less air through the system. So in the end you even get denser smoke than on a large hookah.
A few travel hookahs compared
We have lined up four models against each other here. Only the AMOTION Roam was designed by us and is available from us. Why that is, is explained further down.
| Model | AMOTION Roam | Hoob subAtom | Aladin 2Go | El-Badia P1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Height | 15.8 cm | 12 cm | 23 cm | 24 cm |
| Weight | 1169 g | no figure available | approx. 1.2 kg | 500 g |
| Material | ABS with stainless steel core, silicone | anodised aluminium, stainless steel, acrylic | stainless steel, aluminium mouthpiece | acrylic |
| Glass-free | yes, all colours | yes, acrylic | no, glass base | yes |
| Connectors | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Hose connector | bottom | bottom | at the base | at the base |
| Water capacity | 60 to 65 ml | no figure available | no figure available | no figure available |
| Draw | 280 pascal (measured) | not measured | not measured | not measured |
| Standout feature | spike, magnetic lid, large accessory range | magnetic lock, triple purge, mini charcoal tray | drain valve, fixed diffuser | hose reel inside the base, reversible bowl |
| Price | from 79.99 € | approx. 190 USD | approx. 89 USD | no reliable figure |
How to read the draw figure: The 280 pascal come from a measurement by Doelid using a pump at 45 litres per minute. A lower value means an easier draw. The Vyro One came in at 270 pascal in the same test, a difference he says you cannot feel. There are no comparable measurements for the other models, which is why those cells are empty.
Our favourite: the AMOTION Roam
The Roam was our first hookah from AMOTION and has been on the market since September 2022. For us it is still the best travel hookah you can buy, which is why we have left its design exactly as it launched back then. It was designed consistently for being outdoors and on the move, it looks great, and it has plenty of good add-ons you can use to extend what it does.
What makes it the right choice
- Compact and stable: 15.8 cm tall, 1169 g, with a stainless steel core in the base. If someone pulls the hose, it does not tip.
- We have used no glass at all. The body is ABS plastic with a stainless steel core, all metal parts are stainless steel. That makes it fully festival-ready.
- Hose connector at the bottom: exactly where it belongs on a travel hookah.
- Silicone ring in the base: it does not slide around on the table. On the ground it is held additionally by the optional Roam Spike.
- Magnetic lid: topping up water takes one motion, without the bowl turning as you unscrew and the charcoal falling off.
- Arrives pre-assembled: unpack, rinse, smoke.
- Very easy draw thanks to the short path from the bowl and through the body.
AMOTION Roam Travel Hookah View product Where it falls short
Here is what we most often hear about in customer support:
Water in the hose. If you pull too hard or filled in too much water, the water level is too high. Water can then get into the hose. That comes down to the way it is built: on a hookah this small, the path is short. So you do have to pay a little attention while using this hookah to avoid it. Moisture in the hose can also come from not letting the Roam drain properly after cleaning. So let it dry well after cleaning, and purge gently rather than at full force.
No window for the water level. You cannot look inside, and there is no marking. We do have a trick for that, see below.
Smooth hose connector. The connector has no ribbing, which makes the hose a little harder to push on and pull off. If it sticks, put it in warm water briefly.
The water level trick: Take the lid off and set it aside. Inside you will see three rows of circles. Fill water until it sits just above the second row, then put the lid back on. That is roughly the 60 ml the Roam runs best with. No measuring cup needed.
The Roam sets at a glance
The hookah itself is identical in every set, it is purely about the accessories around it. So you can start small and add to it later.
| Set | Price | What comes with it |
|---|---|---|
| Travel Shisha | 79.99 € | the Roam only |
| Shisha Travel Set | 119.99 € | Addon Kit with travel bag, hose and mouthpiece |
| Outdoor Shisha Kit | 134.99 € | plus gas burner and gas cartridge |
| Advanced Kit | 159.99 € | plus charcoal tray kit, spike, ONMO HMD and a bowl |
| Electric Set | 449.99 € | plus XKAH Pro with two batteries and pods |
Prices as of August 2026, some are promotional prices. You will always find the current ones in the shop.
For most people the Shisha Travel Set is the right way in, because the bag makes the difference. Alongside the hookah it also takes a bowl, an HMD, tobacco and charcoal.
AMOTION Roam Shisha Travel Set View product Anyone who is outdoors a lot should think about the Spike. It screws into the thread underneath and goes into sand or soil like a tent peg. That way the hookah stands rock solid even on a lawn.
Charcoal-free on the go: the Roam with the XKAH Pro
This is the most interesting combination of the year for us. The XKAH Pro is an electric bowl with heat management that replaces bowl, smokebox, charcoal and charcoal burner all at once. On a travel hookah that gives you a setup where the entire annoying part falls away.
Think about what you no longer have to pack: no charcoal, no burner, no tongs, no charcoal basket, no tray. And you do not create any embers while you are out, which is a real argument on a campsite or at the beach.
The Electric Set contains two batteries. That is the point that makes it work in practice, because one battery lasts around two hours depending on use. With two batteries you get through a long evening.

AMOTION Roam Electric Set with XKAH Pro View product What the other models can do
We do not stock these three, but they come up in every conversation about travel hookahs. So here is an honest assessment of what they do well and why they are still not on our shelves.
Hoob subAtom
At 12 cm the smallest in this comparison and technically well thought out: magnetic lock, triple purge, mini charcoal tray, acrylic instead of glass. A serious travel hookah.
The catch is the price. In the US it sits at around 190 dollars and therefore at roughly twice the Roam. On top of that the body is anodised aluminium, and that is something we are not keen on with hookahs, because the anodising suffers over time in the hot spots.
El-Badia P1
At 500 g by far the lightest. If every gram genuinely counts, on a hike for instance, that is an argument the Roam cannot match at 1169 g.
The cleverest detail is the patented hose reel: the silicone hose disappears inside the base for transport. On top of that there is a reversible ceramic bowl with two capacities. The price for all that is the centre of gravity. 500 g stand noticeably more wobbly than 1.2 kg, and outdoors that is exactly where problems can start.
Aladin 2Go
The cheapest way into the topic, and solidly built with a stainless steel stem. At 23 cm it is noticeably bigger than the Roam, though. The most important downside of this hookah is that it comes with a glass base. That makes it unsuitable for festivals or the beach.
There are several versions and sets of the 2Go, which, as with the Roam, is quite practical. If you are explicitly looking for a hookah for festivals or the beach, this one should not be on your list.

Festival, beach and camping: what to watch out for
Most travel hookahs are bought for exactly three occasions, and each has its own downsides.
Festival
Glass is banned almost everywhere here, including perfume bottles if it comes to it. A glass-free hookah is therefore mandatory, not a recommendation from us.
What also matters is the distinction between the arena and the campsite. At many events, hookahs are banned entirely on the festival grounds themselves, while glass-free models are allowed on the campsite. That is exactly how it is written in Parookaville's rules, for example.
Read up beforehand: Every festival has its own rules, and they change from year to year. What is allowed at one event can be confiscated at the next. Check the info page of your event before you travel, especially for accessories like gas cartridges or the spike.
Beach
Sand is not a surface anything stands straight on. This is where the Spike on our Roam plays to its strengths. You simply peg the hookah down and stop worrying about the ground. Glass has no place on the beach either.
Camping and out in nature
Without a socket you need a gas-powered charcoal burner, which works anywhere. You can pretty much forget an electric one on the go, because a device like that draws several hundred watts and no power bank delivers that. If you want to sidestep the whole topic, look into electric solutions like the XKAH Pro.
Are there travel hookahs with two connectors?
Put briefly: no, and there is a good reason for that. A second connector means more volume, more height and an additional valve that has to stay sealed. That is precisely at odds with the point of a travel hookah.
If two of you are smoking, passing one hose around is the better solution. And if you genuinely need two connectors, you are better served by a small hookah than by a travel hookah.
Taking a travel hookah on a plane
Because there are no glass parts, travel hookahs survive transport in checked luggage far better than a classic hookah. Wrap a T-shirt around it so nothing gets scratched, and you are set.
One point that is easy to overlook: if you travel with the XKAH Pro, the battery belongs in your hand luggage, not in the suitcase. Lithium batteries are not allowed in checked baggage.
Our verdict
If you are looking for a travel hookah, there is hardly a way past the AMOTION Roam. It is compact, completely glass-free, stands securely thanks to the stainless steel core, has a nicely easy draw, and is the only one in this comparison with an accessory range you can use to adapt it to your situation.
Its weaknesses are very manageable: dry it well after cleaning, do not purge too hard, and get the water level exactly right. If you want to go one step further, take the Electric Set and leave the charcoal at home altogether.
FAQ: travel hookah
What is the best travel hookah in 2026?
For us the AMOTION Roam. It is 15.8 cm tall, weighs 1169 g, is completely glass-free and has its hose connector at the bottom, which makes it very stable. On top of that comes the largest accessory range in this class. It starts at 79.99 euros.
Does a small hookah smoke less well?
No. How much smoke and flavour come through depends on the bowl and the smokebox, not on the size of the hookah. On a small hookah you even pull more smoke straight from the bowl, which makes it fresher.
Can I take a hookah to a festival?
That depends on the organiser. Hookahs are often banned on the festival grounds themselves but allowed on the campsite, provided no glass is involved. Check the rules of your event before you travel, they differ from festival to festival.
Why should a travel hookah be glass-free?
Because glass is banned at almost every festival and has no place on the beach. On top of that comes the practical reason: what has no glass will not break in your backpack.
How much water goes into the AMOTION Roam?
60 to 65 ml, we recommend 60. Without a measuring cup you can go by the three rows of circles inside: take off the lid and fill water until it sits just above the second row.
Why is water getting into my hose?
Usually the water level is too high, or there is still moisture in the device after cleaning. Let all parts dry well after rinsing, do not fill beyond 65 ml, and purge gently rather than at full force.
Is aluminium or stainless steel better?
For the parts exposed to heat, stainless steel is the better choice. Anodised aluminium wears off over time where the charcoal sits, whereas stainless steel looks like new again after a clean.
Are there travel hookahs with two connectors?
Practically not. A second connector means more volume and more height and therefore runs counter to the purpose of a travel hookah. For two people on the go, you simply pass the one hose around.
Can I take a travel hookah on a plane?
In checked luggage generally yes, and because there is no glass it survives the trip well. Batteries, from the XKAH Pro for instance, belong in your hand luggage. The details are in our article on travelling with a hookah on a plane.
What is the difference between the Roam sets?
The hookah is the same in every set, only the accessories differ. The travel hookah on its own costs 79.99 euros, with bag, hose and mouthpiece 119.99 euros, with a gas burner 134.99 euros, and with the XKAH Pro and two batteries 449.99 euros.
