Chapter 2: Cleaning the XKAH Lite – Device, Grommet & Pod

Quick overview

Before every clean: unplug the power and let the device cool down completely.
The pod and the bottom part may go under water, the head element with the electronics may not.

The XKAH Lite is considerably easier to keep clean day to day than its big brother. The hinge is gone, so there is no longer a gap where molasses and condensation can collect. And because the lid can be taken apart, you can actually reach the air vents instead of just guessing at them.

The full routine consists of two parts: the device and the pod. If you do it after every session, the two together take less than five minutes.

Let it cool down first. Unplug the power before every clean and wait until the device is cold. Even after the session you only take the pod out with the supplied tongs, never with your fingers.

Isopropanol 99.9 %, no water and no washing-up liquid
cotton buds, a few spare ones are handy
kitchen roll or paper towels
steel wool or a small wire brush for the pod

Cleaning the head element

Unscrew the top part and take it off the device. The heating plate sits underneath it. This is exactly where vaporised molasses settles, and exactly the spot you should clean regularly and thoroughly.

Start the clean dry. Fold a cloth so that you can get into the grooves with it and pick up the coarse molasses residue.
After that, put a few drops of isopropanol on a cotton bud and go into every corner with it. The heating plate in the middle is part of that too.
Unscrew the small lid on top. It may be washed under running water, it has no electronics.
Take on the air vents with a flattened cotton bud. If you turn the part to the side on the underside, they are exposed and you can get all the way through.

Isopropanol belongs on the heating plate only. Not on silicone and not on the grommet. Alcohol dries silicone out, it hardens over time and eventually stops sealing properly. And never spray the stuff directly onto the device, always onto the cotton bud or the cloth first.

Molasses under the heating plate

If your Lite gives off a light smoke when a session starts, there is usually molasses sitting in the gap under the heating plate and burning there. That is not a defect, just a spot that tends to get overlooked.

Go into that gap with a flattened cotton bud. A dry run helps as well: let the XKAH run once without a pod on the highest heat setting. That is worth doing every few sessions as an in-between treatment.

A discoloured heating plate is not a defect. The plate discolouring in the middle over time is part of it and is caused by the heat. It says nothing about the condition of your device.

Cleaning the bottom part

The bottom part is the relaxed one, there is only one spot you need to watch out for, the contact points on the back. That spot must not get wet. The inside of the bottom part, on the other hand, may be rinsed out with water. While rinsing, hold the connector closed from the outside with your thumb, then everything stays dry there. Moisture on the contacts is the quickest route to a device that will not start any more.

Then dry it thoroughly and blow it out once.

The grommet

The grommet sits firmly in the bottom part, but it can simply be pulled out for cleaning. Rinse it under water, dry it and put it back in.

You cannot put it in the wrong way round, the guide rubbers take care of that. It just has to sit clean and dry, because the connection between the device and the hookah needs to be 100 % tight. You will notice a leak in the result straight away.

Putting it back together

The same rule applies when reassembling as when inserting the pod: first the two arrow markings onto each other, then the contact pins, then twist it shut.

The most common stumbling block after cleaning: the Lite will not close any more. In that case you twisted the arrows out of line while cleaning the top part. Just line them up again and it fits without any force.

Before you plug the power back in, check all the contacts and let everything dry completely. Better to wait a quarter of an hour longer than to switch on a damp device.

Cleaning the pod

The pod wants cleaning after every session. If you stick with it, it takes around ten seconds each time. If you let it slide, the residue burns in and you will be sitting there a lot longer next time.

Let the pod cool down and remove the spent tobacco completely with the fork.
Set the poker end in the middle and lever out the lower mesh without any pressure. Most of the dirt collects underneath it.
Clean the inside of the pod with steel wool in circular motions and do not forget the grooves around the rim. Take on the mesh separately.
Rinse everything under running water and dry it completely afterwards. Smoking with a wet pod is no good for the electronics.
Put the mesh back in with the curve facing down. Press the edges down lightly, lid on, done.

Conclusion

The rule of thumb for the XKAH Lite is easy to remember: anything that carries current gets isopropanol and a cotton bud. Everything else may go under water.

If you give the pod and the heating plate a quick clean after every session, the flavour of your session stays untainted. On top of that, you save yourself the laborious removal of burnt-on residue if you get into the habit of dealing with fresh dirt right away. FAQ – cleaning the XKAH Lite

How often should I clean the XKAH Lite?

The pod and the heating plate ideally after every session, the bottom part as well. The air vents, the lid and the grommet are fine every three to five sessions. Regularly is considerably quicker than rarely and thoroughly.

May the XKAH Lite go under water?

Partly. The bottom part, the unscrewed lid, the grommet and the pod may go under running water. The head element with the heating plate and the electronics may not, there you work exclusively with isopropanol on a cotton bud.

Why does my XKAH Lite smoke at the start?

Usually there is molasses sitting in the gap under the heating plate and burning there. Go into the gap with a flattened cotton bud. A dry run on the highest setting without a pod inserted helps as well.

The heating plate has discoloured, is that a defect?

No. Discolouration on the heating plate is caused by the heat and is completely normal. It says nothing about the condition of your device.

May isopropanol go on the grommet?

No. Alcohol dries silicone out, it hardens and eventually stops sealing. You clean the grommet with water only. Isopropanol belongs exclusively on the heating plate.

My XKAH Lite will not close after cleaning

In that case the arrow markings were twisted out of line while the top part was being cleaned. Line the two arrows up again, then set the contact pins onto each other and twist it shut. You should not have to use any force.
