Chapter 3: Solutions for Problems with the XKAH Lite

Most problems with the XKAH Lite are sorted out in two minutes once you know where to look. Here are the cases that come up most often in our support, each with the specific thing to do. If none of it helps, you will find at the end how to reach us.

The XKAH Lite does not start at all

Normally the Lite boots up straight away as soon as it gets power. If it does not, first press the centre button five times in a row. If it still stays dark after that, there are two possible causes.

Molasses or moisture on the contact points

This is by far the most common reason. Check the contact points on the body and on the head element. If there is molasses or liquid there, the device does not recognise the connection and will not start in the first place.

Clean those spots thoroughly and let them dry completely, until there really is nothing left. How that works is in Chapter 2.

The power supply makes noises

If your power cable clicks or buzzes, there is probably a defect. Please do not keep using it in that case, otherwise you risk even greater damage to the device.

The preheat or a mode will not start

Look closely at how the device behaves while it happens. The Lite tells you quite precisely through the ring what is going on.

Rule of thumb: three times red is worth another try, six times red is a request. With six signals you have to put your hands on the head, a second start attempt will not help.

There is no smoke or no flavour

The device is heating, you draw, and not much happens. Annoying, but almost always harmless. Work through the following points in order.

The way the pod is packed

Less is more. Stir the tobacco thoroughly first and let it fall loosely into the pod without stuffing it. Then spread it gently into the lower corners with the pointed side of the fork.

Pro tip: Form a small hole in the tobacco in the middle of the pod. The air flows through better and the tobacco gives off a bit more flavour.

A dirty pod or a dirty device

Burnt-on residue in the pod costs noticeable flavour and insulates, which means less heat can reach the tobacco. So clean your Lite regularly. The full routine is in Chapter 2.

A leaky connection

The connection between the XKAH Lite and the hookah has to be 100 % tight, otherwise the result suffers noticeably. Use only the built-in XKAH grommet and check that it is seated correctly and has not hardened.

Burnt taste or a smoking XKAH Lite

Two causes, both easy to fix.

Molasses under the heating plate

If molasses is sitting under the heating plate, it burns when the session starts and you get a light smoke. Go into that gap with a flattened cotton bud.

A dry run helps as well: let it run once on the highest heat setting without a pod inserted. That is worth doing every few sessions.

Too much heat for your tobacco

Match your settings to the tobacco you are smoking:

Virginia and light tobacco: 260 to 270 °C
Dark blends: 290 to 305 °C

If light tobacco runs at dark blend temperature, you taste it immediately. Go down just a few steps rather than turning it all the way down at once.

And one more thing that often gets overlooked: a newly set temperature is not reached instantly. Only after roughly 10 minutes can you judge how your change has taken effect. If you let a high starting temperature run for the whole session, you will often get exactly that burnt aftertaste towards the end.

Nothing can be adjusted any more

You turn the dial and nothing happens? Then you have most likely activated the key lock by accident.

To unlock it, press the centre button twice in a row and hold it down the third time until a tone sounds. After that everything responds normally again.

I am getting no smoke even though the device is heating

Check three things: is the tobacco packed too tightly in the pod, is the pod dirty, and is the connection to the hookah really tight. Working through them in that order, you usually find the cause at the first point.
