If you already know an XKAH Pro, a lot of this will look familiar. XKAH did change a few things on the Lite on purpose, though, and those come first.

What is the XKAH Lite?

The XKAH Lite is an electric HMD. It sits where the bowl, the smokebox and the charcoal would normally be on your hookah and takes over that entire section electrically. Your hookah, your hose and your mouthpiece stay in use exactly as before.

That means: no hookah bowl, no HMD, no natural charcoal, no charcoal burner, no charcoal tongs and no charcoal basket. The tobacco goes into the supplied pod and you control the heat through the device.

The Lite is the newer of the two XKAH devices. Everything learned from the XKAH Pro went into the development of this one.

What sets the XKAH Lite apart from the XKAH Pro

Both devices do the same job and use the same pod. The differences are in the detail, but you do notice them day to day.

Good to know: If you are switching over from the Pro or own both devices, your existing pods, your tongs and your fork tool still fit. So there is no need to buy new accessories.

What is in the box

Once you have taken the device out of the box, it is worth another look inside the packaging. The scope of delivery includes:

the XKAH Lite in your colour, available in black, blue and red
the 2.50 m power cable and the matching plug adapter
two tobacco pods
the fork and poker tool for packing the pod
the tongs you use to take out the hot pod
a small travel bag, plus the manual, quickstart guide and stickers

You will look for a loose grommet in vain, and that is exactly right. On the Lite it sits firmly in the device.

How the XKAH Lite is built

The device consists of two parts that you simply screw together. The heating element sits on top, the chamber that takes the pod sits underneath.

On the upper part you can also unscrew the small lid. The air vents sit underneath it. Heat escapes upwards through these vents. On the Pro you can only reach these spots with difficulty when cleaning, which makes the Lite much easier here.

On the back there is a magnetic power connector for the cable. If you catch the cable by accident, the connector comes off instead of your whole hookah tipping over.

Packing the XKAH Pod, step by step

How well your session runs is largely decided right here. Feel free to use a kitchen scale the first few times. After a couple of sessions you will have a feel for it and will not need it any more.

Mix your tobacco thoroughly in a small bowl first. Plan for around 14 g, as some of it stays behind in the bowl.
Put the pod on the scale and tare it. Then let the first 5 to 6 g fall in loosely.
Spread this first layer evenly into the lower corners with the tip of the fork. The mesh should not show through anywhere, otherwise you get air pockets at the bottom.
Let the rest of the tobacco fall in loosely until you reach 10 to 12 g, then spread it again. Do not press it down, the tobacco should stay fluffy.
Pack it up to the rim, a little above it is fine. Then put the lid on and the pod is ready.

Pro tip from our support team: Form a small hole in the middle of the tobacco. The air then flows through better and the tobacco gives off a bit more flavour.

The three most common mistakes when packing the pod

When a session does not run well, it is surprisingly often down to the pod and not the device. These three are what we see most often:

Too little tobacco. The heat does not reach it properly and the session stays weak.
Too much tobacco. The pod is overfilled, the draw suffers and it quickly gets too intense.
Pressed down too firmly. The classic one. With compressed tobacco hardly any air gets through and the heat is distributed unevenly.

Inserting the pod and fitting the device

Unscrew the top and place the pod in the chamber so that you can read the XKAH lettering. Then put the top part back on and twist it tight.

The single most important step: There is a small arrow marking on both the top and the bottom part. The two arrows have to point at each other, otherwise the device will not close. If your Lite absolutely refuses to shut, this is almost always the reason. Line up the arrows first, then the contact pins, then twist it shut.

After that you put the Lite straight onto your hookah. You do not need an extra grommet, it is already built in. Press it on briefly and you are done.

Finally, attach the magnetic connector to the XKAH Lite and then plug the power cable into the socket. The device boots up and lights up.

The modes: Auto or Custom

The controls are deliberately kept simple. You have a dial and a centre button at the front, nothing else.

At the top end of the dial you will find Auto mode. That is the factory setting and it regulates the heat by itself. As soon as you turn the dial and set a temperature, you are in Custom mode and set the temperature yourself.

Both modes run for the same length of time: 8 minutes of preheat, then a 50 minute session. So just under an hour in total.

Which temperature for which tobacco?

In Custom mode you should set the temperature according to the hookah tobacco you are smoking. As a starting point:

Light tobacco on a Virginia base: 260 to 270 °C. Most Virginia blends should not be smoked too hot, light tobacco reacts sensitively to heat.
Dark blends and strong mixes: 290 to 305 °C. These blends need considerably more heat to perform well.

Let the session run with these settings for around 10 minutes before you change anything. It takes a while for the heat to fully build up and take effect.

After about 10 minutes you can adjust the temperature to your own taste. Most people turn it down a little at this point. If the base tobacco comes through or it gets harsh, that is a clear sign to turn the temperature down. If the session is not intense enough for you, turn it up in small steps. After two or three sessions you will have found your perfect settings.

What the light bar tells you

There is a light bar running above the XKAH logo. It tells you at a glance where your device currently stands.

Solid blue	session is running
Red	the last 3 minutes of the session

On top of that, the ring on the control element builds up during the preheat and counts back down over the session. Once the ring is full, you are good to go.

Starting your first session

Pod in, cable connected, temperature selected? Then hold the centre button for 2 seconds. A tone confirms it and the preheat starts.

Use those 8 minutes well: rinse out the hookah, fill the water, grab a drink. When the signal tone sounds, the preheat is done and you can take the first draw.

Give the tobacco a few more minutes after that. The first draws are usually thin, the smoke builds up over the session. Draw sparingly in the early phase, then no heat builds up and you notice more easily when it is really there.

And if you notice halfway through that the temperature needs adjusting, you can always fine tune it on the dial, even while the session is running.

Not by accident: If you press the centre button five times briefly, you switch the device off. You do not want that during a running session, although there are of course situations where it is necessary. We show you the other shortcuts in Chapter 4.

Conclusion

Getting started with the XKAH Lite is quickly told: pack the pod loosely with 10 to 12 g, line up the arrows, fit it on, plug in the cable, choose a temperature, press for 2 seconds.

The two places where people stumble at the beginning are a pod packed too tightly and the arrow marking when twisting it shut. Once you have those two in your head, the rest runs by itself.

The next chapter is about cleaning. That is considerably more relaxed on the Lite than on the Pro, because the hinge is gone and you can reach everything from above.

FAQ – first steps with the XKAH Lite

Does the XKAH Lite need a battery?

No. The XKAH Lite runs on the supplied power cable with a magnetic connector. That means there are no charging breaks and you can smoke as many sessions in a row as you like. It is therefore not intended for use on the move, where the XKAH Pro is the right choice.

How much tobacco goes into the pod?

10 to 12 grams. First fill in 5 to 6 g loosely and spread it into the corners until the mesh no longer shows through, then top up the rest. Do not press it down, the tobacco should stay fluffy.

Do the pods from the XKAH Pro also fit the Lite?

Yes. Both devices use the same XKAH Pod. You can also keep using the tongs and the fork tool from the Pro.

My XKAH Lite will not twist shut, what is the reason?

The arrow markings. There is a small arrow on both the top and the bottom part, and the two have to point at each other. Line up the arrows first, then the contact pins, after that the device closes without any force.

Do I need an extra grommet?

No. On the XKAH Lite the grommet is built into the device and fits almost every common hookah. You can pull it out for cleaning and put it back in afterwards.

How long do the preheat and the session take?

The preheat takes 8 minutes, the session after that runs for 50 minutes. So just under an hour in total. That applies in Auto mode just as it does in Custom mode.

Which temperature should I set?

260 to 270 °C for light tobacco on a Virginia base, 290 to 305 °C for dark blends and strong mixes. After around 10 minutes, adjust the temperature to your own taste and turn it down a little if needed.
