XKAH Pro vs. XKAH Lite vs. shii: which electric hookah suits you?
- All three use XKAH heating technology and the same pod. You won't need charcoal, a charcoal burner or charcoal tongs with any of them.
- You put the XKAH Pro and XKAH Lite on your own hookah. The shii is a complete hookah in itself, which makes it interesting for anyone who doesn't own one yet.
- The XKAH Pro runs on a swappable battery and is the device for on the go.
- The XKAH Lite runs on a cable, costs €60 less than the Pro and belongs in your fixed smoking spot.
- The shii runs on battery or on a USB-C cable and brings the most heat with its hardcore mode.
- Cleaning works much the same on all three: isopropyl alcohol goes on the heating plate, silicone parts and contacts stay clear of it.
- You save around 10 g of tobacco per session. Further down, you can work out when your device pays for itself.
Three devices, one heating technology and still three pretty different characters. The XKAH Pro, the XKAH Lite and the shii heat your tobacco electrically instead of with charcoal. Which one suits you mostly comes down to three questions: Do you already own a hookah, or are you just getting started? Where do you usually smoke? And how much heat does your tobacco need?
Yannick aka KVSSEL put the three side by side for us. Here you get his comparison to read through, plus a comparison table and a calculator that shows you when your device pays for itself. Our guide Electronic Hookah explains how it works in general.
Rather watch? In the video (in German), Yannick goes through all three devices. You'll find the XKAH Pro from 1:23, the XKAH Lite from 2:15, the shii from 3:52, cleaning from 7:15 and prices from 14:15.
What the XKAH Pro, XKAH Lite and shii have in common
All three heat electrically. That means everything tied to charcoal is gone: buying charcoal, letting it glow through, topping up with tongs and eventually replacing your charcoal burner. You pack your tobacco into a pod, and the device takes care of the heat.
The pod is the same in all three, the shii's just carries its own logo. It holds 10 to 12 g of tobacco, noticeably less than a classic bowl. Under the hood, it's the same story: all three heat with the XKAH heating module.
For your next session: With a second pod, you can pack ahead while the first one is still in the device. The pod fits all three devices.
XKAH XKAH Replacement pod 2-pack Hookah Smokebox View product You can spot the biggest difference by size alone. The XKAH Pro and XKAH Lite are attachments, so-called electric HMDs. You put them on your existing hookah, right where the bowl and smokebox would normally sit. So one device replaces what you would otherwise put together from our Bowls and Smokeboxen categories. The shii is a complete hookah, with the heating unit and base belonging firmly together. So if you already have a hookah you love, one of the two XKAH devices is probably the better fit. If you don't have one yet, the shii gives you hookah and heating technology in one.
XKAH Pro: the battery-powered bowl for on the go
Many of you already know the XKAH Pro, which you'll find together with the Lite in our XKAH category. It's an electric bowl with a swappable battery, which makes it the most flexible of the three. Whether you're travelling or at a festival, you don't need a power socket for your session. What you should know about sessions on the go is covered in the chapter XKAH Pro - Outdoor and Travel.
On the front, there are three buttons and a display. This is where you choose between two modes. In classic mode, a fixed program runs: 8 minutes of preheating, then a 50 minute session. In custom mode, you set the temperature and duration yourself, with up to 305 °C and up to 90 minutes.
If you often smoke away from home, the Pro is your first choice: charge the battery, pack the pod, put it on the hookah and off you go.
XKAH Lite: for your fixed spot
The XKAH Lite is the newest device from XKAH. Instead of a battery, it has a cable at the back, and instead of a display, a dial and a button. Auto mode sits at the top of the dial, with the temperature levels up to 310 °C next to it. As soon as you pick a temperature, you're basically smoking in custom mode.
The cable gives the Lite its fixed spot, and that's exactly what it's built for. If you always smoke at your desk or coffee table anyway, you get two solid advantages: you can smoke session after session without recharging, and the Lite costs €60 less than the Pro.
Since the Lite came after the Pro, it already benefits from that experience. The vents where molasses occasionally leaks out on the Pro now sit on top. That improves the airflow and makes cleaning easier. Instead of a hinge, the Lite has a bayonet lock, so you simply twist the top and bottom together. And you can keep using your accessories from the Pro (all in XKAH Extensions), because the pods, fork tool and tongs are the same.
shii: the complete hookah with XKAH technology
The shii is for everyone who'd rather have a ready-made setup than an attachment for their hookah. The heating unit sits on top, the base with the water at the bottom. Because everything is firmly connected, the top always sits securely.
That makes the shii especially interesting if you don't own a hookah yet. Instead of buying a hookah first and an electric bowl after that, you get everything together right away: heating unit, base, hose and mouthpiece. Pack the pod, fill in the water, and your first session can begin. How a hookah works in general is explained in our Hookah Beginners Guide.
When it comes to power, the shii can do something neither XKAH can: it runs on battery and, if you like, on a USB-C cable too. You can even charge your phone through the port at the back during your session.
The second big point is heat. Here the shii can do everything the XKAHs can: you smoke in auto mode or set your own temperature. On top of that, you can switch to hardcore mode. It preheats much more aggressively and reaches far higher peak temperatures, made for very strong blends. That's clearly meant for experienced smokers who know exactly how much heat their tobacco can take. As a beginner, you're better off starting in normal mode.
Apart from that, the controls are simple. With the button on the front, you power the shii up, start the session and switch it off again, and there's a silent mode too. You set the temperature with an encoder ring. A light ring shows you whether the shii is preheating, whether the session is running or whether it's coming to an end. A small button on the battery at the back shows you the charge level at any time, and there's a carrying handle on top. You open both the heating unit and the base with a quarter turn.
XKAH Pro, XKAH Lite and shii compared directly
Here are the most important differences between the three devices at a glance:

305, 310 or 315 °C: how much heat do you need?
On paper, the three are close together when it comes to maximum temperature:
| Device | Maximum temperature | Set via |
|---|---|---|
| XKAH Pro | 305 °C | Display, in custom mode |
| XKAH Lite | 310 °C | Dial |
| shii | 315 °C plus hardcore mode | Encoder ring |
The 5 degrees between the Lite and the shii are deceptive, though. The shii's 315 °C isn't an exact reading. Behind the top level is a mode that heats well beyond 315 °C. A Virginia will burn very quickly that way, while for a really strong dark blend it can be exactly right. You can read about how the tobacco types differ in Burley vs. Virginia Hookah Tobacco and in our Dark Blend Guide.
Our everyday recommendation: With the XKAH Pro and the XKAH Lite, start Virginia and light tobacco at 260 to 270 °C, and Darkblend Hookah Tobacco and strong mixes at 290 to 305 °C. After around 10 minutes, adjust the temperature to your taste and turn it down a little if needed.
Is upgrading from the XKAH Pro worth it?
If you already have a Pro, you might be wondering whether the Lite or the shii would be a step forward for you. That depends on how you use your Pro and whether you fancy a completely new setup.
- Your Pro almost always sits on your desk: Then the Lite is a good fit. You smoke without recharging breaks and simply take your pods, tongs and fork tool along.
- 305 °C isn't enough for you: Then take a look at the shii. With its hardcore preheating, it brings your tobacco to a temperature well above that of the Pro and Lite.
- You regularly take the Pro with you: Then stick with it. For on the go, it's the best choice of the three.
Cleaning: what's the same and what isn't
As with any hookah, regular cleaning is essential here too, because it decides how long your device keeps running reliably. The good news: pods and heating units are built the same way in all three. Once you've got the hang of cleaning one device, the others work just as well.
Pod and heating plate: the same for all
For the pod, Yannick recommends steel wool and the fork tool. With the fork tool, you lever the screen out of the pod, which lets you reach the residue deep down too. Many people forget this step, even though it's quick with the right tool.
The right tool: With the XKAH fork tool, you lever the screen out of the pod and spread the tobacco when packing. It works with all three devices.
XKAH XKAH Gabel-Stecher - Black View product You clean the heating plate on all three devices with isopropyl alcohol. Put it on a folded cloth rather than directly on the device, and leave out the silicone parts and contacts, because isopropyl alcohol makes silicone brittle. Small stainless steel brushes help with stubborn spots. Always clean the heating unit itself dry or with isopropyl alcohol, water doesn't belong there.
Good to know: It's normal for the heating plate to discolour over time, that comes from the heat. If a thick black ring forms around the plate, though, that's your sign for a more thorough clean.
XKAH Pro
The Pro consists of two parts. At the bottom, you take out the silicone part for a deep clean, and at the top, you clean the heating plate. The seals at the top and bottom can also be removed so you can clean underneath them. Also check the side vents, where a drop of molasses comes out every now and then. Take the battery out before cleaning and ideally put it straight on the charging cable, so it's full for your next session.
You'll find every step in detail in the chapter XKAH Pro - Cleaning.
XKAH Lite
The Lite is a little easier still, because the vents are on top. You twist the device open and clean the vents easily with cotton swabs. The heating plate gets isopropyl alcohol as usual. The silicone part on the underside, where the pod sits, comes out so you can clean it separately. Keep the pins dry while you do. And there's no battery to take out with the Lite, since it runs entirely on cable.
The detailed guide is in the chapter XKAH Lite - Cleaning.
shii
The shii takes a bit more work, because it's a complete hookah as well. At the bottom, there's a perfectly normal base, which you clean like any other hookah (everything on that in Clean your Hookah the right way): change the water, wipe it out with a sponge or your hand, clean the downstem and dry everything. The wide opening makes it easy to reach everywhere.
Before you get to the top part, take out the battery. Then release the heating unit via the bayonet lock and clean it like the XKAH, with small brushes, cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol. Don't spray the whole part, the contacts stay dry. The silicone part in the top section sits deliberately tight so that no molasses runs down the side and the air takes the right path. With a little patience, you'll still get it out.
Clean the stem and downstem with a brush. If you run water through them, hold the top part at an angle so nothing runs into the battery compartment. Only put the shii back together once everything is dry.
Watch the contacts: The shii has contact pins at the top and bottom. Keep them free of water and isopropyl alcohol while cleaning, and keep an eye on the battery compartment when rinsing the stem. After the first clean, you'll quickly get the hang of it.
How much do the XKAH Pro, XKAH Lite and shii cost?
The XKAH Pro costs €329.99, the XKAH Lite €269.99 and the shii €449.99. That makes the shii the most expensive of the three, but it already includes the complete hookah. You put the Pro and Lite on your own.
What happens after you buy is more interesting than the price. You no longer buy charcoal or charcoal burners, and each session puts around 10 g less tobacco into the pod than into a classic bowl. Even at three sessions a week, that adds up over the months.
Calculator: when does your device pay for itself?
Choose your device, set how often you smoke per week and see how much you save each month and after how many months you've earned back the price.
If you smoke cheaper tobacco or usually pack smaller bowls, as in our article Economical Hookah Bowls, the result shifts a little. By the way, you'll also find the comparison and calculator for the XKAH Pro and XKAH Lite in our Electronic Hookah category.
Which device suits you?
- XKAH Pro: if you smoke on the go a lot and the freedom of a battery matters to you.
- XKAH Lite: if your hookah has a fixed spot and you want the cheapest way into electric smoking.
- shii: if you don't have a hookah yet and want a complete setup right away, or if your tobacco needs a lot of heat.

FAQ: XKAH Pro, XKAH Lite and shii compared
What is the difference between the XKAH Pro and the XKAH Lite?
The XKAH Pro runs on a swappable battery and has a display with three buttons, while the XKAH Lite runs on a power cable and is operated with a dial and a button. That makes the Pro the device for on the go, while the Lite belongs in a fixed spot, costs €60 less and runs without recharging breaks. You put both on your own hookah.
Do the XKAH Pro pods fit the XKAH Lite and the shii?
Yes. All three devices use the same pod, the shii's just carries its own logo. You can also keep using the Pro's fork tool and tongs with the Lite.
Can I put the shii on my own hookah?
The shii is a complete hookah in itself, with heating unit and base. If you want to keep smoking your own hookah, the XKAH Pro or the XKAH Lite is the right choice.
Which device suits me if I don't own a hookah yet?
The shii. It's a complete hookah with heating unit, base, hose and mouthpiece, so you don't need anything else. As a beginner, start in normal mode and save the hardcore mode for later.
Which electric hookah gets the hottest?
The shii. The XKAH Pro goes up to 305 °C in custom mode, the XKAH Lite up to 310 °C. On its top level, the shii has 315 °C plus a hardcore mode that heats well beyond that. It's meant for very strong dark blends and experienced smokers.
Which device is best for on the go?
The XKAH Pro. It runs on a swappable battery, and as an attachment you simply take it along with your hookah. That makes it the best choice for travelling or festivals.
Can I also smoke the shii on a cable?
Yes. The shii is the only one of the three devices that runs both on battery and on a USB-C cable. You can even charge your phone through the port during your session.
Is switching from the XKAH Pro to the XKAH Lite worth it?
If your Pro almost always sits in the same spot anyway, yes. With the Lite, you smoke without recharging breaks and take all your accessories along. If you need more heat than 305 °C, the shii is the more interesting option.
How do I clean the heating plate?
With isopropyl alcohol on a folded cloth, the same on all three devices. Leave out the silicone parts and contacts, and never let water near the heating unit. Discolouration of the heating plate is normal, but a thick black ring means you should clean more thoroughly.
How much do the XKAH Pro, XKAH Lite and shii cost?
The XKAH Pro costs €329.99, the XKAH Lite €269.99 and the shii €449.99. The shii already includes the complete hookah, while you put the Pro and Lite on your own.
How much tobacco do I save with an electric hookah?
Around 10 g per session, because the pod holds 10 to 12 g of tobacco and a classic bowl usually needs a lot more. On top of that, you no longer buy charcoal or charcoal burners. The calculator in the article shows you when your device pays for itself.
