Hookain Popo: the brand's first stoneware bowl

Alongside hookah tobacco and accessories, Hookain has been building bowls for a while now. The Lit Lip came first and landed immediately: distinctive glazes, a shape of its own and performance that backed it up.

The Popo was the next bestseller, and for Hookain it was the first hookah bowl made from stoneware.

The key facts
  • Made from US stoneware clay, fired twice
  • Around 1250 to 1260 degrees, which makes it very dense
  • Bleeds much later than a normally fired bowl
  • Small depot and economical on tobacco to match
  • Fits all common smokeboxes

What makes the Popo special

At first glance the Popo looks like a small, chunky bowl. You cannot tell how much development went into it. The difference to conventional bowls is in the material.

Stoneware clay

The clay is denser than usual, and then there is the process: it is fired twice at around 1250 to 1260 degrees. That closes off practically every pore. It shows in the weight and it delays bleeding considerably. The look stays with you for longer, and molasses seeping out is barely an issue.

The advantages

The Popo is made exclusively from US stoneware clay, which gives it a long life. The smaller capacity means it uses less tobacco than most other phunnels, and you still get the results of a larger depot out of it.

  • Material: US stoneware clay, fired twice
  • Consumption: smaller depot, economical to match
  • Price: under €30 and therefore at the low end for a stoneware bowl
  • Compatibility: fits all common smokeboxes

How to smoke the Popo

Either way works: phunnel with a smokebox, or with aluminium foil. We recommend the smokebox, it gives you better control over the heat.

FAQ: Hookain Popo

What is stoneware clay?

A particularly dense clay, fired twice at around 1250 to 1260 degrees. That closes almost all of the pores through which molasses would otherwise soak into the bowl.

Does the Hookain Popo bleed?

Much later than a normally fired bowl, because firing it twice closes most of the pores. Over the long run it cannot be prevented entirely.

How much tobacco fits in a Popo?

Less than in most other phunnels, the depot is deliberately small. You still get the same session out of it, because the bowl uses the tobacco well.

Which smokebox fits the Popo?

All the common ones. The bowl is built to the usual dimensions, and it works with aluminium foil too.
