What is the difference between an e-hookah and an e-cigarette?

There is one question our customer service hears all the time: "Do you also sell e-hookahs?" The honest answer is usually a question in return. What exactly do you mean by that?

Because e-hookahs, e-cigarettes and vapes are really the same thing. We have quite a few of them in stock, and they are popular for good reason: small, ready to go in seconds and available in loads of flavours. When we ask a bit more, though, it often turns out that someone is actually looking for an electric hookah. And that is a completely different system.

So you do not end up in the same tangle of terms, let's clear things up once and for all. You will find out what is behind each name, how the devices work and which one suits you.

The terms at a glance

A lot of the confusion comes from the fact that the same device goes by several names. The table shows you what is actually meant:

So the first three rows are one and the same product. Things only get interesting with the fourth.

Why is the same thing sometimes called an e-hookah and sometimes an e-cigarette?

That is mostly down to history and marketing. The first e-cigarettes were meant as an alternative to tobacco cigarettes and often looked like them too. Later came more compact devices, more vapour and above all sweet, fruity flavours, like the ones you know from hookah tobacco. In retail, the name e-hookah or e-shisha caught on for these devices.

That did not create a new type of device, though. Today the lines are completely blurred anyway. A modern pod system can taste just as fruity and produce just as much vapour as anything ever sold as an e-hookah.

Our tip: when buying, look at the system behind it rather than the name on the packaging.

How a vape works

Whether it is called an e-hookah, an e-cigarette or a vape, the principle is always the same:

1. Draw: You draw on the mouthpiece, and on some devices you also press a button.
2. Power: The battery supplies energy to the heating element, known as the coil.
3. Vaporise: The coil heats the liquid, creating an aerosol.
4. Inhale: You breathe in this vapour through the mouthpiece.

Most devices have automatic draw activation. A sensor notices that you are drawing and starts heating by itself. How battery, coil, pod and liquid work together in detail is explained in our guide to vapes.

Prefilled pod or open pod?

With vapes, there are two main systems today. Both are reusable devices: the battery stays and only the pod gets swapped.

If you want it as simple as possible, prefilled pod systems are your thing. It feels almost like the classic e-hookah used to, except that you keep the same device and only swap the pod.

So what is an electric hookah?

This is the real difference many people are searching for. An electric hookah works with tobacco instead of liquid. It takes the place of the charcoal on your water pipe. Instead of a bowl and charcoal, there is a stainless steel pod that you fill with regular hookah tobacco. A heating plate heats it from above, and you smoke a proper hookah session, minus the charcoal lighting.

That also makes an electric hookah something for a proper session rather than a quick break. It preheats for around eight minutes, and a session then runs for 50 minutes. Think an evening on the sofa or with friends.

Which one suits you?

Before it comes to devices, there is a much more basic question: do you want to vape or smoke hookah? They are two different things, and most people know pretty well where they belong. Many hookah smokers have no interest in vapes at all. Others use a vape for a quick nicotine hit in between, but would never give up their hookah for it. That is why we look at both paths separately.

You want to vape

Then vapes are the right place for you. A vape is always at hand, fits in any pocket and is ready to go straight away. Which system suits you depends mainly on how much you want to control yourself:
